A very good basic bean casserole. If you've made baked beans from scratch, yes the syrup fits. But I just stick to the splenda brown sugar. If you don't like the soup, use diced tomatos and drain the kidney beans. Cooks well in the crock pot. Need it to go farther add black & pinto beans. - 6/17/09

I substituted lean ground turkey & threw everything in my big crock pot to stew all day. Kids & all loved it; I added shredded cheddar to theirs. Very simple & great way to get all those beans in there! I will likely double the green beans & add some corn next time. I did not use the syrup. - 6/9/09

READ THE INGREDIENTS DETAILS. This does not add up exactly in the details she says 4 tsp mustard which is not 2 Tbl this will lower the sodium also. I would omit the maple syrup and half the sugar, half the ground beef add a can of black beans and maybe some spices. Maybe add some carrots or Veggie - 6/8/09

I really like it! I only used one pound of ground beef but with all the beans there is a lot of protein and it still is very good. - 12/5/08

Add a little vinegar, a couple tablespoons or more depending on what you like. Vinegar adds a little zip. - 11/2/08

After reading some of the comments,it's hard for me to believe some of you women actually cook for families. If you don't like some of the ingredients, change it. If the quantity is too much, use less. Your not going to die if a serving is more or less than a cup. You don't have to be a Genius . - 8/10/09

If you add the additives up, its roughly 1 cup to the serving. I left sugar and syrup out and was pretty good. For me, 1 serving ended up being 2 cups. oops! - 8/9/08

I've made a variation of this for years. It is a great favorite at church potlucks. I've never brought any leftovers home any time I take it! One BIG difference...and my husband loved it--the amount of hamburger. He hates beans so.... Great recipe. - 12/20/07

I make something similar - instead of ground beef I use bacon - 1 pound, no celery - although that would be good and the only tomato is from the paste - and no syrup - is sweet enough w/ brown sugar - the bean combo - is great - I throw in whatever I have on hand. - 6/8/08

This was really good! It was on the sweeter side though, so if you're looking to cut calories, you can probably halve the brown sugar and maple syrup. I added some crushed red pepper for a little kick. - 9/1/09

I'm always Mystified how many people confuse the words RATING with OPINION. We are Rating a recipe that we have made....How is your Opinion helpful if you haven't.... then you give it a bad Rating based on some part of it you don't approve of....

I was sent this recipe a couple of months ago and I thought it was about the worst I have ever seen, much less tried. Thank goodness I cut it in half. I eat a lot of beans and only used half the cans of beans....... what a waste of my time this one was. NOT good at all. - 8/10/09

I noticed that there are no spices mentioned.
I like Marjom or oreagano with this type of dish.
Also I'm a chili head and would add some chipolte pepper or crushed red pepper, cayenne pepper would also be a welcome addition....Chef Jim, oh yea,got to have garlic, fresh or powder.Pepper is good to.

I am sorry, but when I read the ratings, that is what I would like to read. Do not think readers should post an opinion if they have not made or tried the recipe. I also changed the recipe and made it in mycrock pot. Usually a recipe is made for individuals according to their likes and dislikes. - 8/20/10

Good combo of ingredients...But I would leave out the brown sugar and only use the maple syrup. Use low sodium "everything in a can" and no salt added ketchup! Sub. the pork & beans and the lima beans with others, like black beans and cannellinnis!!! Also will make vegetarian(no meat). - 8/10/10

I just made this recipe.....I'm a fairly decent cook and this recipe is terrible. Too sweet and too large a batch. I just hope I will be able to get my husband to eat it or I will have to throw it out....I will try serving it over some rice. - 3/7/10

I wish these recipes would put how big a serving size was - this is suppose to be 25 servings. Also that is a lot of sodium for 1 serving size sounds delish but too high for me to make for my hubby with hi blood pressure. - 11/4/08

Also does it need to be a huge one? posting w/o trying food should be fine,w/o rating it - 8/10/08
