I don't eat gelatin cuzza the pork, but would try making it w/juice. Great idea, and sounds yummy! ILOVE fat-free cool whip on just about anything, so I can't wait to try this. I'd say do whatever you want with the leftover gelatin - prepare it, toss it, other, etc. - 6/3/08

I agree that the directions are confusing concerning the jello. I had to read it a few times and then deducted that the jello is to be thrown away--what a waste!
Apples are expensive in the stores at $2.99 a pound now. No apples on the trees yet so this will have to wait. Fixed incomes suck!

Great recipe! i made a few changes to meet my dietary restrictions. For religious reasons I can't have gelatin and I have a severe nut allergy. I crushed graham crackers and added cinnamon, brown sugar, and a bit of butter to mine. It was really delicious! - 1/15/13

    Incredible!
I tried it, but switched nuts to edamame, simply because that's what I had in the cupboard. I love the recipe and it came out tasting really good. Also, very easy to make. I'll definitely do it again... even for friends. - 6/5/11

Easy to make while getting ready this morning. Enjoyed this treat for breakfast. Left off the whipped cream and nuts. Tasted fine! I am saving the gelatin to see if it sets. - 10/8/08

It sounds like a nice variation on a baked apple. I have used a teaspoon of brown sugar and 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon sprinkled over the apple, cover and bake. It is delicious. It is fun to think of other ways to enjoy an apple for dessert and feel like it was a treat, not fruit - 6/4/08

If the gelatin does'nt set up, make it into punch with some juice over ice. It is summer. - 6/3/08

Always make your WORDS sweet...you never know when you may have to eat them. I didn't make this recipe, but there is no need to make cutting remarks, either. - 6/3/08

It's possible to loose weight without the use of artificial sweeteners. The only reason I can see using them is if you are diabetic. The person who suggested apple juice had a better idea. It's more of a poached apple rather than baked anyway. - 6/3/08

This sound like a good recipe. Sometimes I core and microwave an apple, add cinnamon and diet sweetener, a couple of crumbled Ritz crackers and Cool whip. It tastes almost just like real apple pie. - 6/3/08

was pretty simple and the flavor was pretty good I left the nuts and topping off feeling they were not necessary but that was to taste thanks

I like the idea of cooking in apple juice or cider with cinnamon and walnuts in the microwave. That artificial sugar stuff can give you heart palpitations. - 6/3/08

This sounds pretty good to me. I liked the idea of pouring the gelatin mix over cake. Angel food cake would be really good. If not, put the gelatin in the fridge to set. If it doesn't set then toss it. I bet there are lots of ways to use the leftover gelatin. Hmm, good question for message board! - 6/3/08

My kids hated it. The gelatin was a bit much. - 6/3/08

it sounds confusing the gelatin part of it, and i think in order to remain simple duplicate th4e gelatin paper with ordinary gelly powder and let the apple set inside it refrigerated. - 6/3/08

Next time, no Gelatin nor topping for me.

To keep it healthy, I would simply core the apple, sprinkle a bit of Cinnamon and that's it! Apples are naturally sweet enough to my taste.

I haven't made this yet but after reading the recipe (and before reading everyone comments) I knew I was going to save the gelatin and pour over a white cake to make jello-cake for my family. No need to throw it away - use it for other treats. Not confusing at all! - 6/3/08

    O.K.
So much fussing and chemicals. OK if you are bored I guess, but could be so simple...core, score around mid section, add a bit of fruit juice abd a touch of honey and cinnamon in the centre et voila! ps micro recipe - 6/3/08

Wow-all this drama over some gelatin? Anyway-the gelatin needs to cover half the apple to flavor it, then the apple is turned over to flavor the other half. I would think a person could decide for themselves if they want to let the gelatin harden after cooking the apple in it or toss it. Be nice! - 6/3/08

I never had a "baked" apple that wasn't actually put in the oven. Sounds interesting - 6/3/08

Mmm, sounds interesting! I use my microwave to make a baked apple after coring and peeling an equator place strip and then add diet cream soda and raisins to the core cavity and sprinkle with cinnamon. heat until soft, serve with yogurt or diet Cool Whip if desired. - 6/3/08

AFTER reading the good notes explaining recipe, I figured it out. No one said this, but I simply use about 1/4 of the package of the jello dissolved in 1/4 of HOT water called for on package, add 1/4 COLD water called for on package. Add the apple & cook.
Use rest of package to make JELLO!!!

I plan to make this but I don't use any diet stuff since they are bad for you. I see nothing confusing about the recipe and wonder why anyone is tossing out the gelatin. Couldn't you still put it in the fridge and eat it later? Wasteful to toss it IMHO - 6/3/08

Sounds good. BUT Need to add to the directions that after the apple is cooked to throw out the gelatin.
There is no need for others to be snippy about those who can not understand that. It is not clear what to do with the gelatin after cooking the apple.

Honestly, I'm not trying to be mean, but the directions SHOULD be rewritten to clarify. I consider myself a pretty intelligent person (not in a conceited way) but had no clue that the gelatin was to be tossed...I was just as confused as the others! Thanks for the great recipe though! - 6/3/08

    Incredible!
Plan to make this right away. I didn't think the directions were confusing. Just throw away the gelatin when you're through cooking the apple. The gelatin is not to be jelled first. The gelatin adds the flavor to the apple. - 6/3/08

I made it, easy to follow. When it says make gelatin it just means add the hot water and stir to dissolve it and then add the cold water. You don't let the gelatin set up. It adds flavor to the apple and then you dump it. Tasted good! - 1/14/08

Haven't made yet..sounds good. Directions aren't confusing at all..it's basically telling you to prepare jello according to box, then stir in cinnamon. Pour into a pan and add cored and peeled apple. Cook for 15 min, turn over cook another 10. Remove apple and let cool. You then dump the jello mix - 11/29/07

  • no profile photo

This seems great! Does anyone know if the whole purpose of the jello is just to flavor the apple while it's cooking and then you toss it? I hope that's not a dumb question! :-) Still, I'm gonna try to make it! - 11/29/07

This recipe doesn't make sense to me. Are directions correct? Do we heat the apples in the geletin after it's hardened in the fridge or just in it's liquid form? Also, that's a lot of geletin after adding all that water, even if it doesn't harden in the fridge. ??? - 11/29/07
