I subbed out the margarine for the same amount of applesauce--making it 1/2 c. applesauce instead of 1/4 c. applesauce and 1/4 c. margarine. I also only used 1/4 c. sugar. They were wonderful and it put it to a little over 117 cal instead of 152! - 6/5/08

Excellent. I added ground flax seed and wheat germ for extra nutrition and texture. I also upped the chocolate chips, using the minature chips. I got 18 muffins. I guess my muffin pan is smaller. - 3/8/09

So easy to make! I followed along with the Splenda and applesauce substitutes...but I used more than 1/4 c. of chocolate chips! :) I will definitely make these again! - 11/1/08

I just made these muffins and they are awesome!! I used chocolate + peanut butter chips and it came out great! I think I accidentally used more applesauce than I was supposed to, but the muffins came out super moist. Thanks for the recipe! - 9/3/08

I am always speculative of "healthier" versions of baking, but I was pleasantly suprised by this! I also subbed double the applesauce for the butter because I was out of margarine, but it was still yum yum. Even my honey (who literally HATES healthy things) liked them! - 8/14/08

Wonderful! My kids loved them as well.
I followed JDLANDER and subbed out margarine for applesauce. I also used Splenda instead of sugar. I figure this puts each muffin at about 100 calories.

Just made these today! They turned out great and were very easy to make. I also subbed out the margarine for applesauce (making it 1/2 c of applesauce total). I baked the muffins on the center rack for about 22 minutes and they were nice and moist (but not too moist!) Will definitely make again! - 10/30/12

This was my first "healthy baking" experience and I have to say: WOW! If only I'd know how delicious these would be Id have started much sooner. Hubby & Kids loved them. I kept the recipe pretty much as is, with the exception of apple sauce. I used 1/2 cup & no margarine. THANK YOU!!! - 10/19/12

I used I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Light instead of margarine and 1/2 cup mini chocolate morsals instead of 1/4 cup regular chocolate chips (the recipe didn't seem to have enough chocolate chips). I also made 34 mini muffins with the recipe instead of 12 full sized muffins (only 57 calories). - 9/6/12

Well, true to tradition for me :) I accidentally left out the margarine altogther! They were very dense and stuck to the paper liners, but they rose pretty well considering, and tasted fine. Since my goal tonite was something sweet or I was going to eat something I'd really regret, I was happy. - 9/6/12

I also left out the butter and added more applesauce, as well as cutting the sugar, but I used more chocolate chips! I made them into mini muffins for more portion control. Yummy, I hope they freeze well! - 8/7/10

Excellent! I cut the sugar in half, used whole wheat flour and added 1/4 cup wheat germ. Kids love them. Husband is okay with the results. I also made them as small cookies and they held together just fine. - 2/1/10
