Delicious flavour. Only used 1 tbsp basil though. Next time I would soak the pea before making as they were still tough after cooking on low for 8 hours. I had to cook for an additional 2.5 hours on high and then the texture was perfect. Would definitely make again!! - 11/25/08

Great on a cold winter day! We soaked the split peas overnight, at the suggestion of some reviewers. We also sauteed the onion and celery with 2 cloves of minced garlic, before adding to the crock pot. We added black pepper and the ham bone, too. It was a hit! - 1/25/09

My husband went nuts! This was very good and was perfect after easter. I did throw in some small bits of ham at the end and had to add that to my calorie total. Made it with some Kreutz fat free Cornbread and Landolakes lowfat butter and what a meal!! Thanks. - 4/19/09

This was AWESOME never made pea soup before but hubby has been asking forever. The only thing I changed was cut back on the basil and added pepper and a tiny bit of lite salt. Otherwise perfect!! - 5/28/08

I made this on the stove. Sauteed the veggies then added the split peas and ham. Next time will not add the water. I had to cook it for an additional hour to evaporate the excess liquid. LOVED the soup! - 1/27/08

Made this for dinner tonight and it was awesome! After reading reviews I used the 4 cups water to soak the peas overnight, added the rest of the ingredients in the morning and cooked on low for 10 hrs. Used 1 Tbsp basil, 1 tsp thyme, and a bay leaf. Will definitely make again!!! - 1/30/13

I was a little disappointed with this soup. I love split pea soup and had never made it before. This isn't exactly what I was looking for. I should have read the reviews and cut down on the basil. Surprisingly my husband loved it, so that's why I gave it a 4 rather than a 3. - 2/26/13

Easy! Don't think I'll get 12 servings though. I am counting a cup as 1.5 servings in my tracker. Good thing I'm at work or I would have eaten another serving. Only used 8 oz of chopped ham and that was plenty. - 3/2/10

This was delicious. I put all the ingredients together the night before, so the peas soaked overnight. We also added more ham than it calls for. Think I'll add more carrots next time. Two kids and two adults give this a thumbs up! - 1/18/10

Loved this soup. I did add the red pepper flakes (1 tsp) and it gave it plenty of heat. I'd love to find a black bean soup recipe next. - 1/10/10

This was great. I used a hamhock and cut and added ham pieces at the end. I then used a blender to get smooth, and then let it cook another 1/2 hour in crock pot. My one daughter and 2 of her friends who hate pea soup had 2 bowls. - 11/14/09

Awesome soup, I have only made Split pea a handful of times, this will become my recipe for it. I added a little bit of red pepper flakes and did not have basil so I used Oregano (one about 1T), also presoaked the peas. My husband had three servings. - 2/9/09

Easy and awesome! Much less sodium than name brands - tastes great, nice and thick like Granny used to make. I served mine with "Low Fat Angel Biscuits" also on SparkPeople recipes. Thanx Disneyfit!! - 2/6/09

DH and kids all said this is the best pea soup I've made. As usual, I used my own defatted ham stock rather than recipe's bought stock. Mine was not very thick but I didn't let it go the full 8 hours either. The basil is really good in this soup - never would have thought it... - 4/18/07
