Introduction

Just like Grandma used to make, she always served this over mashed potatoes with steamed green beans or a tossed salad. Mmmm comfort food! Just like Grandma used to make, she always served this over mashed potatoes with steamed green beans or a tossed salad. Mmmm comfort food!
Number of Servings: 5

Ingredients

    1.5 Lbs Beef Round Steak
    2 Cans Stewed Tomatoes
1 Envelope Lipton Onion Soup Mix
    1 Medium Onion Sliced
    Salt and Pepper

Directions

Sprinkle steaks with salt and pepper, give it a real good pounding with a meat mallet or the back of a knife. Place in bottom of slow cooker, top with remaining ingredients. Cook on low for 6-8 hours. Serve over hot cooked rice or mashed potatoes (not included in calorie count).

*If you have the time dredge the steaks in flour and brown slightly before placing in the slow cooker, adds a lot of flavor but not a necessary step (this would up the fat content as you would need some vege or olive oil).

I actually make almost the same exact recipe, but use half the Onion Soup mix to reduce sodium. A good crockpot tip, place onions (and also root veggies as a rule) on bottom of crockpot to get more of their flavor throughout the dish! - 12/15/09

I made this the other night. It was super easy and really good. I served it with mashed potatoes and broccolli. I did not use a whole packet of onion soup mix, just a couple of Tablespoons. I added fresh italian parsley and a crushed garlic clove. I will make this again! - 1/26/09

Next time I will use 1 can of tomato sauce in place of 1 of the cans of stewed tomatoes and will add another sliced onion and use only 1/2 pkg. of onion soup mix. - 12/12/09

Made this over the weekend. Had to leave out the onion, but it was still very good. I had forgotten to potatoes. So I fixed a few biscuits. I will make this again!Watch how much salt you use, I used too much. - 4/6/09

Try adding a bag of frozen peas. They taste yummy when they pick up the tomato flavor.

UPDATE: We made this earlier in the week. The meat was tender enough to cut with a fork. Even the kids loved it. This is a recipe we'll do again.

I loved this recipe. The only change I made is that I put the sauce through the food processor. I am just not to a chunk sauce but the flavor was awsome. - 3/12/10

I added mushrooms, celery and carrots to the bottom of the crock pot. I skipped the onion mix and salt. Did dredge in flour and browned on a non stick skillet so no added calories. - 2/9/21

Yes, I totally agree -- I used 1/2 the amt. of onion soup to cut down on the sodium. And for sure, layering the veggies on the bottom and then the meat really infuses the flavor throughout. - 12/7/18

This was great. Used 1/2 package of soup as advised and added potatoes. - 8/22/18

Pretty good, although the sauce wasn't super flavorful. I added a little worchestchire sauce and garlic powder the next day and it made it a bit better. Meat was super duper tender though. - 12/11/16

This is very like my recipe except I do not add onion soup, too much salt, but add more onions, usually 3 cups. I never thought to do it in the crock pot and it works great. - 3/17/16

This was so good! I only had one can of tomatoes so I used a can of Sloppy Joe sauce and the finished dish was excellent! Like other commenters, I only used 2 TBS onion soup mix. This will go into my rotation. - 2/15/15

delicious! And I agree put veggies under the meat!
I made a bigger Round Steak to feed the whole family, so it took longer. Sometimes I chop this up too and fix it like a stew adding potatoes etc.

This recipe was easy and delicious. I pretty much followed the recipe as is, but forgot the onions. I had a slightly smaller round steak but I still used both cans of tomatoes. I thickened the sauce slightly with cornstarch and water then put it all with egg noodles, but used brown rice for me. - 7/17/12

Made this today using 2.5 lb. top round steak. So, in addition to a 14 oz. can of petite diced tomatoes, I added a small can of tomato sauce. I also used Mrs. Dash instead of onion soup, and browned the meat prior to putting in crockpot. I always serve my Swiss steak with yellow rice & green beans. - 10/10/10
