*I have been making a "version" of this recipe since the 1950s. *I have tried both canned and fresh green beans. *I prefer the canned. *I do NOT like cream of mushroom soup in anything! *I use either "golden mushroom" or "beefy mushroom". *To me either one gives a better "taste" than "cream" style. - 11/15/16

My heart dropped when I read canned soup, then even more when I read canned onion.
That canned soup is very retro for current recipes. I did by a tin recently. But the dish still tasted if margarine, or cheap butter. My opinion.
Canned onion? Cook fresh onion while the beans are pre-cooking! - 12/22/14

My son loves green bean casserole, but since my husband and I are now GF, I have to make a modified version from scratch. More work, but still delicious. Like the idea of topping with almonds instead of french fried onions. Then use almond milk in the mushroom gravy because of DH's lactose issues. - 11/25/13

I have not made this EXACT recipe...but close enough. Rather than frozen/canned beans, I use fresh green beans and steam them just enough to leave a slight crispness. Mix with Campbell's Golden Mushroom soup (I've heard it's healthier). Top w/ onions and it's delish! I love the slight bean crunch! - 11/25/13
