Introduction

I used to love grabbing smoothies, until I stumbled across the nutrition facts! I was really in shock when I looked up the nutritional information for my favorite smoothie, the jamba juice banana berry smoothie. The smoothie can contain up to 560 calories, and GET THIS, 115g of sugar. You think you are doing something good for your body, instead you are overloading it with tons of added sugar and other hidden culprits like frozen yogurt and sherbet! While the froyo and sherbet they add are fat free, they are desserts in themselves, and not something I want in mid day pick me up.

I came up with a smoothie that is just as creamy, thick and sweet as jambas smoothies, without all the added calories, sugar, and frozen desserts.

Number of Servings: 2

Ingredients

    1 frozen banana
    1/2 cup frozen strawberries
    1/2 cup frozen blueberries
1/4 - 1/2 cup of no sugar added flavored water (i like to use water with fruit essence, and no artificial sweeteners. cherry or berry flavors work best, but peach is nice too)

Directions

Freeze a banana split into 4 pieces ahead of time (I usually keep bananas in my freezer at all times!)

simply put the banana and berries into a food processor or blender and add 1/4 cup of the water. Let the frozen fruit sit out for a bit until it is slightly defrosted, maybe 5 minutes. (this makes it easier on the food processor)

run the processor. If it is really having trouble either add another 1/4 cup of water, or let the fruit defrost a little longer.

Run the food processor until all the ingredients form a sorbet like texture.

Serve and Enjoy. It really is fabulous and great for anyone trying to keep fit! It tastes so decadent!

I make this pretty much every day except I add low-fat yogurt. I'm going to try it your way! Although instead of letting the frozen fruit thaw for five minutes I rinse it under warm water to get the outer frost off. - 11/4/09

This sounds good, but why use unnatural things like the flavored water? I like Alton Brown's Buff Smoothie: 2 oz. unsweetened grape juice, 2 oz. soy milk (unsweetened), 2 oz. frozen banana (about 1/4 banana), 2 oz. strawberries, 2 oz. berries, 2 oz. peaches. All unsweetened. Blend. - 8/7/10

I do not like the taste of flavored water, but would totally try this with just regular water and a squeeze of lemon, lime, and/or orange. - 11/4/09

I never made a smoothie before, but I have a freezer ful of frozen berries from the U Pick, so I'm giving this recipe a go. Sounds like a good way to get a sweet pick-me-up without the calories and fat of a dessert! - 11/4/09

This sounds really good and I can't wait to try it. I usually make my smoothies with your ingredients but with Greek yogurt, too. I'd never actually really thought of trying it without the yogurt. - 11/4/09
