Ingredients

    Main Batter:
    1 c. chopped dates
    1 1/2 c. boiling water
    1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
    3/4 c. melted margarine
    1 c. granulated sugar
    2 eggs
    2 c. flour
    3/4 tsp. baking soda
    1/2 tsp. salt

    Topping:
    1/2 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips
    1/4 c. granulated sugar
    1/2 c. coarsely chopped walnuts

Directions

Add boiling water and 1 1/2 tsp. soda to chopped dates. Mix and let cool. Combine melted margarine and sugar; add eggs and beat. Add date mixture. Stir together flour, baking soda, and salt. Add to first mixture. Pour into 9"x13" greased and floured pan (or coat pan with no-stick spray like Pam). Sprinkle top with mixture of chocolate chips, sugar, and nuts. Bake 33-40 minutes at 350 degrees. Cake is done when knife inserted into cake comes out clean. Makes twenty 2.25" x 2.25" pieces.
