Ingredients

    2 large potatoes
    4 medium carrots
    2 medium celery stocks
    1 large onion
2 cups yellow split peas or lentils
2 small ham hocks, or 1 ham steak cut up
    1 can beer
    3 cups water
    1 tbsp half salt

Directions

In a food processor grate the potatoes, carrots, onion & celery. Put the ham hocks in the bottom of a large crock pot and dump the shredded veggies on top. Add lentils or peas and salt. Pour the beer and water over the pot (crock should be full to almost the top with liquid).

Cook on high for 4-6 hours or low for 6-8 hours.

Remove ham bones and cut up meat into bite sized pieces before serving. If using a smoked ham steak, shred or cut into pieces before serving.

Makes 8 large bowls of soup.
