Ingredients

    1/2 pound extra-lean ground beef
    1/2 pound extra-lean ground turkey
    1/3 cup grated parmesean cheese
2 slices whole wheat bread (soaked in water)
    1 large egg
    1 small raw onion, chopped
    1 tbsp olive oil
1 large can crushed tomatoes (with the juice)
    3 cloves garlic, minced
250 grams whole wheat spaghetti (cooked)
    1 cup grated carrots
1 mashed banana - the secret ingredient!
    1/4 cup water
    salt and pepper (to taste)

Directions

Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium heat, then saute the minced garlic. Add half of the chopped onion. Pour in the crushed tomatoes and their juice, and simmer everything for ten minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste. Put the beef, turkey, and the rest of the chopped onion in a large mixing bowl. Add the parmesean cheese, egg, grated carrots, and the mashed banana. Mix everything together with your hands. Using an ice cream scoop, make the meatballs, and roll them with your hands. (You should have 13-15 meatballs.) Bring the sauce to a gentle boil, then slowly drop in the meatballs. Cook for 15 minutes, until cooked halfway through. Turn the meatballs over, and add the 1/4 cup water, or enough to loosen the sauce. Simmer everything for another 15 minutes, until the meatballs are fully cooked. Serve to 4-5 people over the cooked spaghetti.

This recipe is amazing! The I love how the "secret ingredient" (mashed banana) brings out all the flavours. It's super easy to make. I also added some finely chopped spinach to the meatballs, to get some more veggies. - 2/27/11
