Introduction
The key to this recipe is using the right beer! Choose something like a basic lager, not too light or dark. Try Smithwick's, for example. The key to this recipe is using the right beer! Choose something like a basic lager, not too light or dark. Try Smithwick's, for example.Number of Servings: 16
Ingredients
-
3 cups self rising flour OR 3 cups all purpose flour plus 4.5 tsp baking powder and 0.75 tsp salt
1 tsp salt
1/3 cup sugar
12 oz (usually one can/bottle) beer
1 T. butter
Directions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine flour (salt and baking powder as well, if using all purpose), salt, and sugar in a bowl. Using a wooden spoon, mix in the beer. Try to use a good beer with a smooth finish and medium body. I've used Smithwick's with good results, a local lager with even better results. Spoon batter into a buttered loaf pan and bake for 30-40 min. When the bread is nearly done (toothpick or knife inserted in the center comes out practically clean) brush the top with 1 T. butter and bake for another 5 min.
