Introduction

A great, lower-cal twist on french toast. Maple extract gives the flavor of syrup without the calories, and chinese five-spice gives the traditional french toast seasonings a kick!

I ate all four slices with 4 links of vegetarian breakfast sausage and an orange for a more balanced, yummy, vegeterian meal!

Ingredients

4 slices Light Wheat bread (I used Schwebel brand)
    Butter-flavored cooking spray

    1/4 cup egg substitute
    1/4 cup 1% milk
1/4 tsp Chinese Five Spice mixture
    1/4 tsp Imitation vanilla
    1/4 tsp Maple extract
1 tsp artificial sweetener (I used a packet of Ideal)

    2 tsp powdered sugar

Directions

Mix egg substitute, milk, five spice, vanilla and maple extract in a flat, low bowl.

Spray a frying pan with butter-flavored cooking spray. Dredge each piece of bread in the egg/milk mixture, then place onto the pan and cook over medium heat. Watch to avoid burning. Flip to cook both sides.

Sprinkle powdered sugar on top before serving.

    Incredible!
I had this this morning and it was AMAZING. So, so delicious. I think this might be my very favorite french toast (and french toast is just about my favorite food)! I'd make these again in a heartbeat. I made a couple substitutions (i.e. almond milk) but either way--THANK YOU for posting. A+ recipe. - 4/1/12

This sounds amazingly good. I think I will try this but will most definitely use real vanilla. (There is just no comparison.) - 9/26/11
