I used ground turkey instead of beef & left out the ketchup. I calculated this w/ extra lean beef & no ketchup & it came out to 237 cal. (which is still great), but w/ 1 lb. 99% & one lb. 93% turkey & no ketchup it was 137 cal. per serving. (for anyone who cares). Also less fat & more protein. :) - 10/27/07

This was really good. I halved the recipe and added about 1 TBSP of BBQ sauce. I topped with a little added ketchup. I omitted the onion, but used a lot of onion powder. Will definately make again. Thanks! - 10/3/09

easy and delicious--my changes: substituted 1 pound ground turkey for ground beef
omitted ketchup, bread, one egg, and onion--added 1 can evaporated milk, used extra oatmeal and panko (instead of bread)--added 2 packets of onion soup mix, garlic powder, onion powder, celery salt, and cooked celery

The whole family loved it. Grew up on meatloaf and now really like this version. It was a much lighter version then the old fashion country one. I used low carb ketchup to save some cal and carbs. Next time I will go with the leanest version of meat to save on the grease. - 2/1/09

I skipped the applesauce and instead of ketchup I added BBQ Sauce. Then I baked it in a 9x13 baking dish for 45 minutes and drained the fat. Next I spread a can of tomato soup over the top and baked another 5 minutes. It was easy to cut the portions into the size I wanted. - 11/6/09

I made this recipe with low carb ketchup (reduced sugar) rolled oats instead of quick oats and bread crumbs instead of the bread. I added the topping from the barbecue meatloaf recipe(again using reduced sugar, low carb ketchup) and splenda brown sugar. It was delicious! - 2/11/08

Made it last night and my family loved it, including the kids! Cut the recipe in half and baked it in a glass loaf pan. Also added garlic. It had a unique flavor. Will definitely make it again. - 10/29/07

I did away with the eggs and added more applesauce, used more oatmeal and skipped the bread. My husband is very fussy, and I didn't think he would like it, but he said it was very good! Made it in muffin tins and froze the rest. We'll have this again! - 10/29/07

Would this hold together well enough to make meatballs? I do NOT fry my meatballs, but bake them on my sprayed broiler pan. But so often they DON'T hold their shape because they are too soft. Do you bake them half the time for muffin tins and maybe 20 minutes for meatballs? - 9/13/12

I wasn't sure how my family would like this since my husband is a meatloaf snob & my daughter hates meatloaf. I was pleasantly surprised that they BOTH liked it. My daughter even commented how she thought the applesauce made the difference. I made it in muffin tins. Perfect for 12 portions. - 1/17/10

I won't have any difficulty finishing off the left-overs, but I'm not likely to make this again. For full disclosure, though, I did not grow up eating meatloaf and this was something of an experiment. - 12/13/08

I don't know if I did something wrong or what. This meatloaf tasted wonderful...however, it is very mushy and fell right apart, we had to scoop it out of the pan with a spoon... The flavor was very good though :) - 10/29/07

My great aunt used to make Swedish meatballs using applesauce and oatmeal and it was always a big hit. I bet this recipe would work very well if I eliminated the ketchup, make the meatballs and used low fat cream of mushroom soup and onion soup mix as the gravy. I'll also try it as the meatloaf. - 10/26/07

This was a hit with my family! They raved about it! Instead of making small loaves of meat loaf, I used a muffin tin to make mine in. The portion size was perfect, and everyone enjoyed getting their own individual meat loaf! - 10/23/07

I'm definitely going to try this, but since I don't eat beef I'll substitute GROUND TURKEY. I'll also use EGG SUBSTITUTE in place of the 2 whole eggs. Both of those cook the same and are lower in fat and cholesterol. Thanks for a great recipe! - 10/23/07

I add a bit more oatmeal and omit the bread. Also, if you add a bit more applesauce, you won't miss the egg, which is a binder. And I agree about the garlic---there is little that can't be improved by adding garlic! - 10/23/07

Yuuuuummy! Just made this and both me and my picky 3 year old LOVE it! I added a bit of Garlic and that was it! Can't wait to see how it after it is frozen! - 10/11/07

this was good!!!! I actually made two loaves and froze the other one- made some changes such as not usng the bread, added minced garlic and sage for a sweeter taste. I also figured in my sauce of ketchup, brown sugar and whostershire sauce. great with a salad!! - 10/9/07
