Number of Servings: 32

Ingredients

    4-5 cups flour
    2 T yeast
    1 t cinnamon
    1/2 t nutmeg
1 cup milk, warmed to around 140 degrees
    6 T butter or margarine
    1/2 cup sugar, divided
    1 t salt
    2 eggs

Directions

Mix 2 cups flour with yeast, cinnamon and nutmeg.
Heat the milk, butter, and half the sugar until it reaches 140 F.
Add the milk mixture to the flour mixture, along with the eggs. Mix until smooth.
Add more flour, a little at a time until the dough is smooth.
Cover and let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free area for an hour, until it doubles in size.
Split the dough in half and roll each half into rectangle. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut 16 hearts from each half.
Grease two baking sheets and place the hearts on them. Allow to rise another 30 minutes.
Preheat oven to 375.
Bake 12-15 minutes, until golden brown.
While still hot, shake donuts in a paper bag filled with the remaining sugar and cinnamon, if desired.

I made these for family to devour after dinner. Devour them they did!

I used teaspoon handle to poke a hole in each then a piping bag to squeeze a small amount of jam into each one. Omg the plate was cleared in minutes! Obviously you will have to also track the jam.

Yeast added with dry ingredients and higher temp. liquid is ok. Yeast dissolved in liquid needs temp. about 105. Adding yeast to milk at 140 would kill it.

I made this recipe exactly as written and it didn't not turn out good at all.
Shouldn't you put the yeast in warm milk and let it sit for a few minutes before adding?
Sorry this recipe needs some updates or changes. Food network has a real simple donut recipe that works...

These were rather small but at only 104 cal they made a nice treat. It is only the first 2 bites of anything that gives the satisfaction of taste anyway. - 12/17/18

Does not state how thin/thick to roll out dough to. Also after putting cinnamon into dry mixture there is none left for the bag with sugar. Recipe needs more details or additional cinnamon for bag with sugar. We'll see. making it now. - 2/17/21

What makes this recipe "heart healthy"? White flour and butter? How about part whole wheat flour (white whole wheat) and canola oil instead?

The only problem I had was that the cinnamon sugar wouldn't stick to them - they're basically sweet biscuits. My husband likes them with PB & J and I tried one with low fat cream cheese & home made freezer jam & it was yummy. As it's only hubby & I, I gave half to our neighbours. - 2/15/16

These were delicious and not that difficult considering I am not a baker and use yeast about once every 5 years. I couldn't get the sugar to stick to the donuts so I made a quick glaze with milk, powdered sugar and cinnamon - 2/15/16

How big of a rectangle are you supposed to roll out? How big of a cookie cutter are you supposed to use? It looks pretty small in the picture. Maybe one inch? - 2/12/16
