Southern States tradition says, that if you eat black-eyed peas on the first day of a new year, you'll have good fortune throughout the year.This is inspired by the traditional recipe and has all of the old fashioned flavor your family will love! Ingredients

    Bacon, 2 medium slices, cooked crisp, remove
    1/2 Onions, raw, chopped
    1/2 cup Carrots chopped
    1/2 cup Celery, raw, .5 cup, diced
    dash garlic powder
    1 tsp. Thyme, ground
    1 can Blackeye Peas
    2 cups Swanson Chicken Broth 99% Fat Free
    1 tbsp. Barbecue Sauce

Directions

Cook the bacon crisp and reserve. Saute onion, carrots and celery until soft. Add chicken broth, garlic powder and barbecue Sauce and simmer 30 minutes. Serve with cornbread.

    On first glance at this recipe, my mind went, "Huh"? I re-read the recipe & figured what was meant. It looked a little "watery" in my mind, so I added a 2nd, drained can of Black-Eyed Peas with Jalapenos, which gave it a teeny bite. This is in the rotation for sure, & not just for New Years! - 12/30/10
