This recipe is great -- I just can't believe all the negative comments. I see recipes all the time that aren't for me and I just delete the email -- I don't take the time to leave nasty comments. For a lighter variation, try 1/2 cup of brown sugar and a can of ginger ale. Just as yummy. - 11/17/08

Because of health concerns with corn syrup, I use pineapple juice - it gives a nice flavour to the ham. - 5/20/09

Very good. To lighten it on sugar calories, and sodium all you have to do is buy low sodium ham, leave out the corn syrup and the butter. Ham makes its own juices which when mixed with the honey and spices make a perfectly good coating you don't even need 2 cups of honey. - 5/20/09

I am kind of surprised about those who rated and hadn't even tried the recipe. Also, if you change so many ingredients, just post your own recipe!! I thought this recipe was very good and I think I will try putting the "sauce" in a squirt bottle and try that technique for basting. I love that!! - 7/30/09

Try ham with pineapple slices toothpicked to it. Draws out a lot of the salt (you can taste it in the pineapple slices and ham is less salty). When it' s nearly done take the honey bottle squirt it over the ham. Cook for 15-20 minutes, turn it over, squirt again cook 15 minutes more. Tasty. - 12/11/07

If you don't like so much salt, try "boiling" the ham in apple juice for about 45 minutes before you put it in the oven with the glaze and all. The apple juice removes some of the salt and nitrates and leaves a nice flavor. Also tends to leave it juicier. - 12/30/09

I have been looking for a nice ham recipe and this one sounds perfect. I know ham has heaps of sodium and the honey is sugar but good for you and lets face it we only have ham for christmas so once a year cant hurt. I give this 5 stars. - 5/22/08

Before you throw this recipe out "with the bathwater," why not try substitutions? Jennie O Extra Lean Ham, honey mustard, apple sauce (repl. butter), pineapple juice (repl. corn syrup) = 188.8 cal/serv, 1240.3 sodium/serv, 5 g fat/serv - do a little adjusting! - 11/16/07

Just be careful about how many calories you are actually eating (if that matters to you). Do you realize how THIN 1/16" is? Kind of like paper. I'm pretty sure I couldn't even cut a slice of ham that thin unless I had a professional meat slicer. A "regular" slice is probably more like 4 servings - 5/8/10

I pour ginger ale over the ham, before I bake it. This helps remove extra sodium. I also put pineaple slices on top, with toothpickes, use a little of the pineapple juice, brown sugar, and small amount of light corn syrup. Delicious! - 7/25/09

What's this 'thing with toothpicking canned pineapple slices all over a perfectly good ham -- and really , doesn't EVERYBODY par-boil ham to remove salt ??? This a fairly basic baked ham (Yankee style -- actually real southerners don't use much, if any sugar when cooking - 4/3/10

I've been looking for a good glaze recipe, thank you.
I do agree that this would be an indulgent meal, however compaired to the SUPERSIZED MCDONALDS meals we've all eaten in the past, this is healthier, and obviously a once or twice a year meal!

sounds good. When my family eats ham, we use Turkey ham instead of Pork ham. It's healthier. Also try using pineapples and applesauce. If you have to use corn syrup, try a light one. - 12/15/07

Many years ago I read a suggestion to put vanilla extract on ham as it cooks. It helps to eliminate the chemical smoke flavor & creates an almost maple-y glaze. One of the best things I have ever learned with next to no extra calories!! - 12/21/12

This sounds good. Ham itself is full of sodium. I could tweak it some & cut down on butter. Its not something I would make regularly, but for a holiday treat its good. As someone said, this IS a lifestyle. All things are allowed, in moderation. - 11/16/08

Not everyone on spark is here to lose weight, but gain weight as well. Anything is alright in MODERATION. Ham by default is a very salty meat. i'm sure you could stretch out the portions to make the recipe healthier, and of course substitutions. - 11/16/08

IT was good, but not quite what I was expecting. I probably wouldn't make it again. The ham was free, and we're not plain ham people, so thought I'd try something a little different. If only they could make ham with less sodium. The salt really gets to me! The best part was the glaze sauce. - 11/30/07

This sounds great! .... I do not understand why all the negativity and all the "I think I will tweak it, it has too much sodium,...good grief don`t make it if it you have to change it or if it doesn`t suit your dietaryneeds.. and to the one who thought she had to slice 1/16", look again , it 4 1/16 - 3/15/12

I haven't made this yet but I recommend for those who are concerned about serving & calories to cut the ingredients and cook hamsteaks instead. It will limit how much you can eat and 4 oz (half a slice) is generally only 100-120 calories. Ham does not have to be just a holiday ordeal! - 1/20/11

I always soak my ham in cold water for about an hour before baking to lower the sodium. Also, use a leaner ham to cut calories & fat, like a Cure 81 or similar brand. It's all lean meat. - 5/8/10
