I much prefer to make my own seasoning blends, and this one is both fragrant and flavorful. In addition to adding these seasoning blends to cooked entrees--I sprinkle them on salads, and I use them when making my homemade salad dressings. - 1/20/10

My adopted aunt, my sister's God-Mother, was 2nd generation Sicilian & she NEVER bought seasoning blends. This is so close to a blend she made it might be the same. People think my spaghetti sauce has a secret ingredient (2 Bay leaves). In the crock pot, the spices will combine to scent the house! - 1/20/11

Spot ON! Whenever I come across something that says to use, say, greek seasoning, cajun seasoning, etc I just look up the recipe and throw a batch together. Those prices at the stores are outrageous; also you often can glean what is IN them simply by looking at the ingredients!! Good point, Meg! - 1/20/10

I use a lot of oregano in my beef recipes and this seems to be better with the added seasonings. Thanks for sharing. I have now made this and used it a few times. Adds flavor. - 3/25/18

If only there were better tasting seasonings than Italian, tired of it, had it all my life, and it doesn't make me feel good to always have that type of seasoning, everything you put it on, tastes the same. Old recipe. Now, in 2020, you can buy many seasonings salt free, that do not taste Italian. - 6/23/13

I got started making my own seasoning mixes when Chef Meg came out with the Taco seasoning mix. It was DELISH. I have half the ingredients to this recipe growing in my garden and didn't have any idea of how to mix them to get more use out of them. Now I have a new use. Thanks, Chef Meg! - 10/21/12

I normally never make anything that Chef Meg posts because everything has Red Pepper flakes and I am allergic. I can't help but wonder what kind of taste buds she has ..... everything must taste the same..... like red peppers.....
    Sorry Chef Meg....

These spice blends are terrific. This one works on pizza and spaghetti, toasted cheese sandwiches...anywhere you want that special Italian taste.
I have a request, Meg, and you are the one to go to. Years ago I purchased 3 spice-blends, made by McCormick, called "1 Step Seasoning."

I suprised myself with how inexpensive spices were from my local grocery's bulk food section. I took a bit of my own spin on this recipe and made an awesome topping for steamed veggies, potatoes, cottage cheese, or whatever - for about 50 cents and it will last me for months! - 1/24/11

I am attuned to almost anything that will reduce the sodium in our diet and have found that adding a little extra spice(s) will "make up" for less salt in recipes. Thanks for this recipe--it will definitely be a staple in our house as we love Italian foods. - 1/21/11

Haven't seed red pepper flakes in Italian seasoning before. As someone who doesn't like hot spices does anyone know if this adds heat to the recipe. I don't even use black pepper so I may just leave it out. - 1/20/11

Yes,fresh herbs are best but hard to grow and maintain in many areas. Some herbs grow better than others.I buy my herbs already mixed with no salt.Look at your local grocery store for mixed herbs with no salt added.I love growing my own herbs but they can be hard to grow in some areas. - 11/21/10
