if I don't have flax seed, what can I substitute with it? - 2/18/10

You can substitute oat bran, wheat bran, wheat germ, or if you don't have any of that just substitute it with more whole wheat flour. I have mixed and matched as needed and they still have turned out great.

Yes, it should read whole wheat flour. Thanks. I am going to edit that.

These are the best waffles I have ever tasted. I didn't have wheat germ on hand so I subbed soy flour for that ingredient and cinnamon for the vanilla. A little extra protein doesn't hurt a vegetarian any! Anyway, they were delicious and I've made a load up in the freezer; they re-toast beautifully. - 1/5/09

These were very good & filling with all of the "good" stuff in them. I topped mine with homemade strawberry sauce. I have extras for another day or to freeze.
Side note...due to the applesauce (I think) it did take a couple of extra minutes to cook after the waffle light went off.

I've made this recipe twice now. The second time turned out great (first time were too dense). I highly recommend adding a bit more milk and whipping the egg whites first and then fold them in at the end. Makes for much lighter waffles. Also added a lot of cinnamon. - 2/16/10

My husband snubbed these waffles but he isn't too found of anything made with whole wheat flour. My sons and I like them and I will definitely make them again. I substituted the vanilla w/ cinnamon. - 7/14/08

Recipe worked well. Like all the grains packed into these. Will be a go to recipe for waffles. Reheats well in toaster oven. I need to make more, and freeze them so they are ready to pull out. - 11/2/15

These sound delicious and I can't wait to try them. Is a serving one waffle? The recipe doesn't say how much is 1 serving. - 2/28/14

These were okay. I love whole grain stuff but these were a little gritty/grainy. They were better with some sugar free syrup. - 8/13/11

I have made these before with a very similar recipe, that includes less applesauce and 1/4 cup of canola oil. I tried this one without the oil and they were great too and less fat. MMMM - 2/27/11

I LOVED these, but my boyfriend wasn't too happy with them for breakfast. He suggested making them for dinner with fried chicken. I think I could do that for him and I could do without the fried skin and save the extra meat for a lunch salad the following day. Thanks for the recipe. - 6/21/10

Horray! I am so tired of whole grain, boxed frozen waffles that look good and taste "yucky". You don't specify sweetened or unsweetened applesauce; I have found unsweetened to be great. LeRoux Creek Applesauce, made in Colorado is especially great - and no I'm not related to the company. :-) - 7/22/09

I usually do use unsweetened (unless I'm in a pinch). Glad you liked them and I will have to try that brand of applesauce (I don't know if it is in the store here.)

These were fantastic. I did not have any wheat germ so I subbed ground almonds. I also added some cracked wheat.
My hubby loved them. They were very filling too.

This was a FANTASTIC recipe! Just what I have been looking for!! My kids went NUTS for them as well!! I made up a batch of these and put them in a freezer bag for an easy, healthy breakfast for the kids! I served these with fruit and a very light drizzle of honey -- recommend 100%!! - 6/30/09
