Ingredients

    2 beaten eggs
    1 cup gingersnap crumbs
    1/2 cup chopped onion
    1/2 cup shredded carrot
    3 tbsp. dried parsley flakes
    3 tbsp balsamic vinegar
    1 tsp salt
    1/2 tsp. caraway seed, crushed
    1 lb ground beef, lean
    1 lb pork sausage
    1 large tomato, sliced

Directions

Preheat oven to 400F. In a large mixing bowl combine eggs, gingersnap crumbs, onion, shredded carrot, parsley flakes, balsamic vinegar, salt, and caraway seed. Add ground beef and pork sausage; mix well. Pat mixture into a 9x5x3 inch loaf pan. Top with sliced tomato. Bake, uncovered for 60 to 70 minutes or until a meat thermometer inserted into the center of loaf registers 170F. Cool in pan 10 minutes. Lift from pan with large spatula. Cut into squares and serve. Makes 8 servings.

    O.K.
    I did not have caraway seeds. Instead of tomatoes, I used apples. Just using what I had. This recipe tasted nothing like sauerbraten. Give it the benefit of a doubt since I didn't have all the ingredients. - 6/12/14
