    Saute 5 Tbsp butter and onion until soft
    stir in flour until incorporated
    Slowly stir in milk and whisk till smooth. Whisk until it comes to a boil and is relatively thick.

    slice potatoes thin and layer in 15x10x2 pan greased
    layer potatoes, ham and half of the sauce mix
    repeat layers

    bake 1 hr covered with foil at 350 degrees
    uncover and bake another 30 min
