Number of Servings: 8

Ingredients

1 pound Pinto beans, rinsed and picked for stones
    1 teaspoon onion powder
    1 teaspoon garlic powder
    1 teaspoon cumin, ground
    1/4 teaspoon oregano
    1 tablespoon Crisco or lard
4 bouillion cubes, any flavor (I prefer chicken)
    Approximately 5 cups water

Tips

No pre-soaking needed. You can use dried beans straight from the bag for this, any variety you like. Black beans work very well in this recipe too.

Directions

Add all ingredients except water and salt to slow cooker. Add enough water to cover the beans by about an inch. Set cooker to HIGH and cook for 6 hours. My cooker tends to cook a little fast so it may take up to 8 hours.

At the end of the cooking time, check the beans for doneness. They should be tender all the way through. Add the salt at this time, stir. Drain off the cooking liquid but reserve it if you are planning to mash the beans as you will need to add some liquid back as you mash. The amount depends on your desired consistency.
