Introduction

Whole wheat flour and wheat germ give the cake a nice taste and firm texture. Apples and raisins add sweetness, if you like it would be easy to increase the quantity of either, use one or the other or even add nuts to the batter to make a cake that you like even better! Ingredients

    1 cup Crisco Shortening
    1 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
    3 cups whole wheat flour
    1/2 cup wheat germ
    2 tsp. baking soda
    1/4 tsp salt
    2 tsp. cinnamon
    1/2 tsp. nutmeg
    1/2 tsp. ground cloves
    1 cup chopped apple (about 1 medium apple)
    1 cup raisins

Directions

Begin by mixing shortening & brown sugar in mixer bowl. Add flour one cup at a time, mixing in well. Mix in baking soda, salt and spices with the first cup of flour. Add applesauce, one cup at a time and then wheat germ. Finally mix in apples and raisins. Spread in greased 9x13 pan. Bake in preheated 350 oven for 50 minutes or until wooden pick comes out clean. allow to cool somewhat before cutting.
