Ingredients

1 cup dry steel cut oats
    1 tsp Chinese 5 Spices
    1/8 tsp Kosher salt
    2 cup Water
2 cups unsweetened vanilla almond milk

Tips

This was my first time cooking steel cut oats on the stove top. I found that at about 20 minutes you need to stay close by to stir frequently to keep the oats from sticking to the pan. Depending on your preference, the oats are ready at 20 minutes with a bit of crunch; at 30 minutes they are creamier.

Directions

Bring 2 cups of the water and almond milk to a boil over high heat in a medium saucepan. Add the oats, 1/2 teaspoon of five-spice powder, and salt; stir to combine; and return it to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally and scraping the bottom of the pan, until the oats are very tender and the oatmeal is as creamy as you like it, 20 to 30 minutes. Makes 4-3/4 cup servings or 3 total cups of oatmeal.
