Introduction

A lower calorie brownie with a chocolate-butterscotch taste This recipe recommends the use of a special flavoring called butavan, which has a butterscotch-like flavor. It can be ordered online, but is difficult to find in stores. If you prefer, you can omit the butavan and just use pure vanilla extract and/or butter flavoring then substitute the chocolate chips for butterscotch chips for about 5 more calories per serving to get a similar flavor. Or, skip the butterscotch flavor and just use vanilla and butter flavoring. :) A lower calorie brownie with a chocolate-butterscotch taste This recipe recommends the use of a special flavoring called butavan, which has a butterscotch-like flavor. Ingredients

    1/2 c pumpkin
    3 egg whites (large eggs)
    2 tsp butavan flavoring
    1/2 c unsweetened cocoa
    1 c granulated sugar
    1/2 c all-purpose flour
    1/4 tsp salt
    1/4 tsp baking powder
1/3 c semisweet mini chocolate chips

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray an 8x8 inch baking pan with cookie spray.
.
In a mixing bowl combine pumpkin, egg whites, and butavan. In a separate mixing bowl combine cocoa, sugar, flour, salt, and baking powder. Pour pumpkin mixture into dry ingredients and stir, just until wet. (about 50 strokes)
.
Pour mixture into prepared baking dish. Bake in the oven for approx 25-30 minutes, or until toothpick comes out clean.
.
Makes 16 - 2x2 inch squares.
.
Recipe Tip - The more you stir the ingredients, the more cake-like your brownies will be. The above recipe will not give you a completely fudge-like consistency - it is slightly more cake-like. Omit baking powder to help make a little more fudge-like.

Fantastic! Extremely moist and chocolaty. Husband had no idea that these were lower in calories. Will definitely make again. Also like the small quantity. Don't need too many of these around since the pan was emptied quickly. - 5/11/09

Made these for a guest and they were fantastic! Exactly what my sweet tooth was craving without going overboard. Used whole wheat pastry flour and only 1/2 cup brown sugar -- didn't miss it one bit! The mini chips were perfect. Will try adding a tsp. of instant coffee for mocha brownies next time! - 1/30/11

So tasty! I was on a time constraint, so I wasn't able to find the butavan flavoring. I used butterscotch chips and mini chocolate chips sprinkled on the top. They were delicious thank you so much for the recipe!!! - 3/19/09

Thanks for the review! For anyone wondering where you can get hold of Butavan (if you don't have to worry about a time constraint) I get mine from here: http://www.earlenescakes.com/store/flavors
.html (shipping can be a little high in price though)

OMG!! These are so incredibly moist. I was happily surprised with my first bite. I did alter the ingredients a little and used 1/2 cup of splenda and 1/2 cup of Sugar to lower the carb intake. I also used whole wheat flower to use it up..It was soo delicious!! - 1/21/09
