Ingredients

    1 cup uncooked lentils
    1 cup uncooked brown rice
    1-1/2 cups carrots, finely grated
    1/2 tsp garlic powder
    1-1/2 cups uncooked oatmeal
    1 tsp season salt
    1 small onion, finely grated

Directions

Cook lentils and rice in 4 cups water for 45 minutes, simmering over low heat in a covered pan. Allow to cool.

Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Shape into patties and cook on griddle or pan (may spray with non-stick spray) over medium heat, until nicely browned (about 6 minutes per side).

    I loved these burgers!!! I found by combining the remaining ingredients while the lentils were still warm, letting them sit 15 more min, and rolling them into balls first, they stuck together fine and made great burgers! Definitely adding to my favorite new recipes!! - 4/14/12

    I grate the carrots lengthwise so that I have about 2" long fine carrot strings, then I make 12 smaller patties (instead of 8). The carrots reinforce things and the smaller patties will stay together for you. Go heavy on the spices, then season the formed patties as you would with meat. Recommended. - 11/3/10

    This makes HUGE patties...quite good but needs more herbs. I added 1 tsp. basil and used fresh garlic. Next time I will add some celery seeds and maybe some cumin. I used brown basmati rice which needed another cup and a half of water to finish cooking. Carrots make for a nice sweet finish. - 10/17/10

    Tasted good, but did NOT form burgers. It needs a binding agent, something a bit more liquid, such as an egg replacer of some kind, I think. Maybe just putting half through the food processor would do it though. Also, be aware that brown rice takes more than 45 min to cook, it just does. - 12/7/11

    I do not use rice, cook only the lentils (add spices), then drain the excess water and mash, add the rest of the ingredients. I also add garlic, 1 egg and if the mixture feels to humid 1/4 cup of crumbled bread that keeps the mixture together. - 8/12/13

    These were great! I took a lot of the suggestions for getting them to stay together, plus melted my cheese on top of the burger while it was still in the pan to give it a bit more togetherness. The burgers themselves were a bit bland, so in the future I'll add more seasoning. - 8/9/13

    Made these last night. The recipe made a LOT of patties! I took some advice from the comments in the original post and cooked the lentils & rice w/ some veggie stock, added in lots of seasonings (+ rosemary & sage) and I also added 2 garlic cloves. Very yummy! Even my picky fiance enjoyed them. - 5/12/13

    Thank you for the nutritional correction. I LOVE these burgers and make them all the time now! I have served them to guests who are carnivores and even they love them. I add Serrano chilies and a couple heaping tablespoons of smoked paprika to the mix before cooking them. Delicious! - 4/23/13

    Didn't stick together AT ALL, I ended just cooking the stuff and eating it like that... very deceiving, I tried adding linseed in water (fake egg) but it didn't work. - 4/21/12

    Could not get these to stick together. I tried adding an egg, and still no success. Finally sauted the filling and using for sloppy joe or burrito filling. I also added mushrooms, since I had some. The flavor is good, but I would like to know how folks got them to stick together and form patties - 1/25/12

    This patty set up and cooked quite nicely for me. I wouldn't put it in a burger though. When you bite down it all mushes out. I also added flavor - fresh garlic, cumin and coriander and served it with a nice hot bowl of canned tomatoes. In a smaller portion serve it for snack. - 1/18/12

    I too had trouble keeping the ingredients together in a patty. Putting them in a pita helps with the mess. After trying to make a few patties, I took the rest and popped it into a casserole dish and baked for a half hour. I liked the mildly sweet flavor from the onions and carrots. - 1/16/12

    I had a problem with these not sticking at all. But the flavor is good enough that I'll keep making it anyway. Very good served with season salt and plain nonfat yogurt on a bun. More like a sloppy joe really. - 8/5/11

    These are really good and filling. Yes they make big patties, but they will fill you up. Yes go heavy on the seasoning, or add your favorite. I also used fresh garlic and diced the onion and cooked it first before I added it. - 3/13/11

    I made this some time ago following the original recipe. Made it again today and will put them into tupperware burger savers, so I will have a uniform size. That way I can freeze them easier. - 10/26/10
