Introduction

We browned this sausage and then sauted some onions/bell peppers to go onto of this vegan dog....delicious! Experiment with your seasonings and come up with new varieties! We are making a mexican dog next time with cumin, jalapenos, cilantro, etc. We make a triple batch each time and freeze, then thaw out and use as needed. Ingredients

1/2 C pinto beans, rinsed and drained
    1 C cold vegetable broth
    1 T olive oil
    2 T soy sauce
    2 cloves garlic, grated fine
    1 1/4 C vital wheat gluten
    1/4 C nutritional yeast
    1 1/2 t fennel seed, crushed
    1 t red pepper flakes
    1 t sweet paprika
    1 tsp dried oregano
    several dashes fresh black pepper
(Feel free to add additional herbs and spices, we did!)

Directions

METHOD
1. Before mixing your ingredients, get your steaming apparatus ready, bring water to a full boil. The rest of the recipe comes together very quickly.
2. Have ready 6 sheets of tin foil. In a large bowl, mash the pinto beans until no whole ones are left. Throw all the other ingredients together in the order listed and mix with a fork. Divide dough into 6 even parts. Place one part of dough into tin foil and mold into about a 5 inch log. Wrap dough in tin foil, like a tootsie roll. Don’t worry too much about shaping it, it will snap into shape while it’s steaming because this recipe is awesome.
3. Place wrapped sausages in steamer and steam for 40 minutes.

If you're veggie or vegan, give this a try! Much better than store bought veggie sausage. Easy to make, though I do bake for 30 minutes also. Keeper! - 2/8/11

    Incredible!
I was a little skeptical but several people recommended this so I tried it. Oh Wow! My husband says they are better than the tofurkey brand sausages. - 2/4/12

    Incredible!
I've used this recipe for years-it even works on the BBQ. You can use so many different spice combos...will have to try the Mexican spice mix, sounds great! - 1/25/12

    Incredible!
These are awesome! They have a very "meaty" taste and texture! I've been phasing meat and dairy out of my diet, even though I don't plan on going completely vegan, and this is the first meat substitute I've found that my kids not only eat, but even ASK me to make! They like them on hot dog buns! - 10/11/11

I made the best chirizo (sp) saturday and today, I am trying this - with the beans, the proteins are up. Thanks - 8/24/11
