Introduction

Crunchy almonds and sweet caramelized onions dress up your favorite green beans. A drizzle of balsamic adds a tangy contrast. Crunchy almonds and sweet caramelized onions dress up your favorite green beans. A drizzle of balsamic adds a tangy contrast.
Number of Servings: 4

Ingredients

1 tablespoon butter or heart-healthy margarine
    1 teaspoon olive oil
    1/4 teaspoon black pepper
    1 large white onion
    4 cups frozen green beans
    2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
    1/4 cup toasted slivered almonds

Tips

Alternate serving suggestion: Simmer the balsamic in a small saucepan until it has reduced by half. If you drag the spoon through the pan and the line remains, it's ready. Drizzle over the green beans just before serving, as we did in the photo.

Directions

Cut the root and tip off the onion, slice it in half and remove the outer layers. Slice into half-moons.
Heat the butter and oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the butter is foamy, add the onions.
While the onions are cooking, heat the green beans according to package directions.
Add the pepper to the onions and cook for 15 minutes, stirring often, until the onions are golden brown.
Add the balsamic to the pan and stir well to combine. Cook another five minutes, until the balsamic has reduced by half.
Add the green beans to the pan and toss to combine.
Remove from heat and sprinkle on the almonds.
Serve immediately.

Frozen green beans have no "unnecessary ingredients." They are simply beans that are frozen. Fresh beans are not always better nutritionally unless they are picked and used immediately. One never knows how long ago grocery store beans have been sitting around. - 11/4/14

I made this but reduced to one serving because I just had a few fresh green beans. Sauteed the fresh beans along with the onion. Oh my this was delicious! I sliced the almonds finely and mixed them in after cooking. I may try this with other veggies too, so good. - 2/4/13

Using fresh ingredients instead of frozen will ensure that it is a healthier alternative. The frozen veggies will have unnecessary ingredients; which is not what this site is all about. Not rated as I have not tried this version - frozen or fresh. - 2/4/13

I have been making this for years. I add 1 tablespoon of minced garlic to the oil, then toast the almonds, then I carmalize the onions. After all of that I use 2 tablespoons of Balsamic vinegar and I tablespoon of red Wine vinegar scraping all of the litle cooked bits off of the bottom of the pan. - 11/4/14

Made this for guests and all raved. Fresh green beans is fine but it was lovely with the frozen. Frozen veggies include no unnecessary ingredients. Wish people wouldn't comment on recipes they haven't tried... - 11/18/13

I suggest toasting the slivered almonds in either the butter or olive oil. Also, salt them when they are cooking. This method really adds flavor. Glenn - 11/28/13

This is similar to my go-to green bean recipe. I use fresh green beans with the ends trimmed, then steam them in the microwave to desired doneness. Then I take a wok or skillet and saute/carmelize onions. Throw in the green beans, drizzle with balsamic, and stir fry until balsamic reduces. - 11/7/13

I tried with and without the vinegar because I'm not much into the flavor of vinegar. I liked it better without but that is just me. Also adding that JIMINYC is right and I_AM_EEVIE is wrong about frozen veggies. Check the package as can get them without any added ingredients. - 12/9/19

I made this and cooked the green beans and onions together with the oil and balsamic vinegar. It tasted great this way as well. I left off the nuts and sprinkled Parmesan cheese and put in the oven o and broiled for 5 minutes. It was great with the cheese. Next time I will try it with cheddar - 2/13/18
