Number of Servings: 1

Ingredients

    8 oz tempeh

    1 small onion

    1 cup BBQ sauce

Tempeh is made from soybeans that have first been soaked, hulled and partially cooked. An acidic liquid like vinegar is added to create an environment that a certain kind of fungus likes, then a fermentation starter is added. The beans ferment in a warm area for about a day and a half. The beans are bound together, and you're left with a block of protein that's ready to be broiled, baked or steamed.

The fermentation helps break down the oligosaccharides, which are the sugars that can cause gas. The protein becomes more digestible after fermentation, too.

When crumbled or grated, tempeh has the texture of ground meat. Try it in tacos, spaghetti sauce or chili. It has a slightly sour, nutty flavor that pairs well with big, strong flavors like curry, tomato sauce, barbecue sauce and teriyaki sauce.

Makes 3 servings (approx 3 ounces each.)

You need to be careful about your choices of barbecue sauce. Some of them use natural flavorings from animals which would make this recipe non-vegan. - 3/9/12

This is a great base recipe for so many meals! I crumbled the tempeh, sauteed with the onion, a stalk of celery, seasoned with soy sauce and then simmered in the BBQ sauce for a yum-yum-yum sloppy joe filling. - 5/3/07

I cut the tempeh thinner because I prefer it that way. This was really really good. I served it on kaiser rolls with a vinegar based coleslaw right on the bun for some "down home" bbq. Hah! Tempeh is a great grain product to work with. I also made my own bbq sauce so the sodium was probably lower. - 3/19/07

Tempe is found in grocery stores that have organic refrigerated food area, usually found in produce area. it has different texture than tofu, is usually found in same general area as refrigerated tofu in stores. is important to check the date on it, fresher is better. is wonderful meat substitute. - 3/9/12

I tried this very same recipe from Trader Joes and I have to admit I was not fond of it. It may have been just the barbeque sauce or the texture I'm not sure. But I just don't care for tempeh. - 4/26/09

It's simple, but delicious! I changed it up a bit by diluting the bbq sauce a bit with apple juice and a dash of soy sauce (i'm not a huge fan of bbq sauce normally). I also added mushrooms and it was delicious on top of some rice! - 1/24/08

I learned somewhere that that tempeh must be cooked twice to get the desired flavor and consistency. Steaming it first will work before marinading it. I'm going to try it that way. 4 stars, though because I love tempeh and I can't wait to try it out. - 7/10/12

Yum! I cubed the tempeh, added bbq sauce, soy sauce, and garlic. I didn't have enough time to marinate, but I know its going to taste even better as leftovers tomorrow!

Ate 1.5 servings with sauted spinach.

I am open minded about many soy/vegan/veg products and love many of them, but have never found my way to liking tempeh no matter how many times or ways I've tried it. Giving a poor rating on the recipe can't be based on my personal dislike of a product, but will give it good stars anyway. - 6/15/12

    Here what Tempeh is:
Tempeh, or tempe in Javanese, is made by a natural culturing and controlled fermentation process that binds soybeans into a cake form.
