I have not tried this recipe but have made oatmeal in the crockpot. Use the steel cut oats, they take much longer to cook. For 1 cup of steel cut oats, use 4 1/2 cups water. You can still add everything else that this recipe called for - 3/2/10

I read reviews and went with the steel cut oats. 1 cup oats, 4 cups water, 1 cup skim milk. I also added 1tsp vanilla. I reduced the raisins and brown sugar by 1/2. My batch made 5 1-cup servings. To each serving, I added 1/2 scoop of vanilla whey protein powder (11g protein). Delicious & healthy!!! - 3/9/11

I looked this up elsewhere on the web. It said to be sure and use Steel-cut oats. It also suggested to put the mixture in a smaller bowl, set it inside the crockpot and to fill the crockpot with water to the bowl's height (sort of like a double boiler.) - 3/8/11

Very tasty but was cooked in an hour. Had to add extra water. Maybe newer crock pots are hotter. I also froze a serving and when thawed the taste was as good as the original. - 1/21/08

I can't rate it because when I woke up it was burnt to a crisp! :( Our crockpot must be extra-hot. - 10/7/07

One thing to keep in mind is that crockpots are designed to cook the best when they are at least 2/3 of the way full. Since this isn't a large recipe, might need to use a smaller crockpot or make 1 & 1/2 recipes at once to keep from burning. - 1/26/10

I omitted the apple. Used Craisins instead of raisins and pecans over almonds. Very good! It only took 90 minutes on low to cook...so I'd check on this before going to bed, or you might not have the breakfast you thought you'd wake up to! - 2/17/08

why would you make quick cooking oats in a crockpot overnight. I could see steel cut oats maybe, but not quick. - 3/8/11

Should have read the reviews before trying this. It burnt. The part in the middle that wasn't destroyed tasted good, so I gave it an extra star for that. - 2/26/11

I did take out the nuts and raisins and doubled the apple. Also only used 3 tbs of brown sugar. Added 3 cups nonfat milk and 1 c water. Started this on low at 12am and it was total mush except apples by 7am.My girls just picked out the apple and said to sweet. ok maybe use tougher oats next time. - 1/13/09

This is a great way to wake up in the morning, even my never-time-for-breakfast husband made time for a bowl.
I did skip the nuts, and used skim milk.

It started to brown at the sides at 8 hours, so I added another cup of water and that kept too much damage from happening. I doubled the apple and added cardamom, the cardamom was I think a mistake; but not a terrible one. I added a little vanilla soy milk to my bowl. Very tasty! - 8/16/08

I would use half the sugar called for in the recipe. While it was surprisingly delicious (I don't usually mix milk with oatmeal), it was a bit on the sweet side. (I used rice milk, not cow milk because I'm vegan). I plan to make this again and again. GREAT and EASY recipe. - 1/4/08

Steel cut oats are a must. I altered the recipe significantly (which is why I won't leave a starred review, out of fairness). No milk or nuts. I used 4 cups of water. Mine made roughly 5 1-cup servings at 260 calories each. Make sure to spray/grease crock! - 11/20/13

Cooking overnight is probably not the thing to do with this recipe. However I thought it was very tasty. Definitely put a new spin on oatmeal now I will probably eat it more. - 2/23/10

Awesome. I love this. I don't see where 7 servings are coming from though. I added an extra cup of water and still only had 4 1 cup servings. Any less than that wouldn't fill me up. On my way to go make some more right now. - 9/21/08

I used steel cut oats. The edges burned and I was pretty bummed because it didn't have any flavor. I added some more brown sugar while the crockpot was still warm. I'm hoping when I get home the extra brown sugar will have given it any flavor at all. Probably won't try this again. - 9/2/13

Well, I should have read the comments below because mine was almost burned. The center of the oatmeal was edible and actually good although it was somewhat dry so I had to put a little more milk on it. I also had to leave the balance in the crockpot soaking so I can clean it this evening. :) - 10/22/12

Thanks to the helpful reviews, I'm going to set my crockpot on a plug-in timer (used for lamps) to begin 1 hour before we wake up so we have a beautiful pot of oatmeal to begin the day. - 12/10/11

No butter or apple. Used dried blueberries instead of raisins. Doubled recipe and it cooked in 35 min. Made ~4 cups. Very good. I liked the crockpot ease, especially as I too often boil over when I'm using the stove.
Also: calorie ingredient list says applesauce and not chopped apple. Just FYI.

I listened to comments & added 4 cups of water to the 2 cups of milk. Instead of using a Crock Pot, I used my Power Cooker. I set the slow cook to 4 hours and let it warm until I woke up. The non-stick surface eliminated any sticking. I would add a little more salt if I made it again. - 3/4/18

I don't buy the quick cooking oats, but instead get either the steel cut / Irish oats or groats and cook them in the crockpot. They do take longer to cook than the quick cooking oats, but you can still add the rest of the ingredients or any other fruits or spices you might like. - 5/2/17

I really liked this recipe, I think next time though I am going to try it with the Steel cut oats. After 5 hours in the crock-pot, its a bit mushy but it tasted great! - 8/15/11

I think 4 to 6 hours on low heat would be enough. My meal was a little dry and stuck to the bottom of the crock pot even though I had sprayed it. - 6/12/11

I used 1C steel cut oats, 4 C water, 1/2 C ff half-n-half, cinnamon, 1 C dried cranberries, 1 C toasted walnuts. It came out slightly sweet. A little mushy, but I'll turn down the heat next time. Everyone really liked it! - 5/4/11

I hadn't thought of slow cooker oatmeal either. I love oatmeal. I think I will try it with the steel cut oats. I love the nuts. While many have taken these out, they are a great source of protein and MUFA's needed to reduce cholesterol. - 4/8/11

I've made this before...using old fashioned oats...and used a mini crock pot...worked GREAT!!!! maybe it doesn't get as hot as the larger crock pots...i don't know!!! but experiment...because when it comes out right...it is DELICIOUS!!! - 3/15/11

I love crockpot oatmeal, but this recipe's calorie & carb count are a little higher than I am comfortable with. I eliminated the apples & nuts, but added nutmeg & vanilla extract with the cinnamon. quite delicious! - 3/14/07
