I got this from Fanny Farmer Cookbook. This is a very plain version to which I might add cheese, parsley or other ingredients depending on how I need to use the sauce. Ingredients

    Butter, unsalted, 6 tbsp
    Milk, nonfat, 3 cup
    Flour, whole grain, 3 tbsp
    salt & pepper to taste

Directions

Melt butter, add flour stir for 1 minute, whisk in warmed milk to prevent lumps. Stir continuously over med heat until it begins to thicken, add salt & other flavorings depending on need.
