Introduction

All of the flavor and comfort of apple pie but with a healthy twist! All of the flavor and comfort of apple pie but with a healthy twist!
Number of Servings: 6

Ingredients

    1 cup brown sugar
    1 tsp ground cinnamon
    1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
    1/4 tsp ground cloves
    1/4 tsp salt
    2 cups (about 6 slices) whole wheat bread cut into very small cubes
    3 cups pared, cored, and sliced tart apples
    1/4 cup water
    3 Tbsp lemon juice
    zest of one lemon
    2 Tbsp unsalted butter

Directions

Blend sugar, spices, and salt. Arrange 1/3 of the cubed bread in a greased 2-qt. baking dish. Top with 1/2 of the sliced apples. Sprinkle 1/2 of the sugar mixture onto the apple slices. Repeat this process finishing with a layer of bread cubes. Mix water, lemon juice, and zest and pour over layers. Dot with tiny bits of butter and bake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
