Number of Servings: 6

Ingredients

    2 Tbsp unsalted butter
    1/4 cup grated onion
    1/4 tsp dried oregano
    1/2 tsp table salt
    ground black pepper, to taste
2 medium garlic cloves, minced or pressed through a garlic press (about 2 tsp)
    1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
    1/4 tsp sugar
2 Tbsp chopped fresh basil OR 1 Tbsp dried basil
    1 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

Tips

1/2 cup is the suggested serving size. You may use less, but it depends on your taste.

Directions

Heat the butter over medium heat until melted. Add the onion, oregano and 1/2 tsp salt and cook, stirring occasionally, until the liquid has evaporated and the onion is golden brown, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Stir in the tomatoes and sugar, increase the heat to high, and bring to a simmer. Lower the heat to medium-low and simmer until the size has reduced to 2 1/2 cups, 25 to 30 minutes. Off the heat, stir in the basil and oil, then season with salt and pepper to taste.

Serving Size: Makes 3 cups total, use 1/2 cup per serving
