Ingredients

1.5 c split yellow peas (chick peas) - dry
    2 tbsp oil
    5-6 c water
    4 cloves garlic, mashed
    2 md tomatoes, diced
    2 tsp. salt
    1 tsp cayenne pepper
    1 tsp ground coriander
    1/2 tsp turmeric

Directions

Wash and soak split peas about 1 hour ahead of time.

Crock pot method: Heat oil in pan and lightly brown garlic. Add tomatoes and sauté for 1-2 minutes. Add salt and spices. Mix well. Add drained split peas and just a little water. Mix well and transfer all ingredients to a crock pot. Add remaining water and cook about 3 hours on med/high setting.

Pressure cooker method: Heat oil in the cooker. Sauté garlic until golden, add tomatoes and spices and mix well. Add water and the drained split peas. Secure the cover of pressure cooker safely. Cook on medium heat for about 20 minutes after the pressure cooker has begun to steam.

Cook to desired consistency, thicker for rice topping and thinner as a soup. Makes up to 12 servings.
