Ingredients

    3 Tbsp yeast
    1 cup warm water
    3 Tbsp sugar
    4.5 cups flour
    3 eggs at room temperature
    1.5 tsp salt
    1 bottle lukewarm beer
    1 grated apple
    2 cups raisins and currents

Directions

Put yeast in 1 cup of warm water with 3 tablespoons sugar and let sit 5 minutes. Make a well in the flour and add yeast mixture, eggs, salt and beer. Beat the mixture until it falls off the spoon in sheets. Add grated apple, raisins and currants. Let rise until doubled in size and punch down. Let rise two more times. Heat cooking oil to 350 F and push dough off spoon into hot oil. Be sure to check periodically to see if dough is cooked. Serve with icing sugar. Makes 30 oil balls.
