Introduction

This was a Lombardo Christmas tradition. Each year my mom and all my aunts would make these cookies and the various versions they created. It is a traditional Italian cookie, chocolate with chocolate chips and nuts. Some made smaller, some larger, drier, with nuts , without, with liquor without. they all were special and made with love. Christmas is not Christmas without them.

Below is my version ( I added more cream cheese and chips) To make it healthier you could use egg beaters and non fat cream cheese, no alcohol, etc.

Ingredients

    1 cup butter (or Crisco or margarine)
    1 cup sugar
    8 oz cream cheese
    3 eggs
    1/2 cup 2% milk
    1/2 cup cocoa
    5 tsp Baking powder
    1/2 tsp Cinnamon
    1/4 tsp Nutmeg
    4 cups flour
    12 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips
    1 cup chopped nuts
    1/4 cup Whiskey
    2 Tbs Rum
    2 Tbs Oil

Directions

add ingredients as listed, stir by hand.

Cream Butter and Sugar.
add cream cheese stir, then eggs, milk stir
then add cocoa, - stir well
add spices, flour and baking powder mix gently
add nuts and chocolate chips and continue mixing.
batter will be dryish, add the whiskey, rum and oil.
stir till throughly mixed, batter will be sticky

*coat your hands with oil.
break off walnut size pieces in your hand, and roll dough till smooth.

bake at 400 degrees for 8-10 minutes
frost or leave unfrosted, depending on your preference. unfrosted it will look like a meatball, hence it's name.
this will make between 70- 80 cookies

to make easier to count, 1 serving equals 1 cookie.
