    12 oz beef round steak, sliced thin
    1 onion, sliced thin
    4 cups romaine lettuce, torn
    2 tomatoes, diced
    1 cup cucumber slices with peel
    1/2 cup lime juice
    1/2 cup fish sauce
    2 cloves garlic
    1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
    1/4 cup fresh mint, chopped
    1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped
    2 Tbsp olive oil
    2 cups cooked jasmine rice


In medium skillet, heat 1 Tbsp oil over medium high heat. Stir-fry steak slices until browned. Remove from pan and add remaining Tbsp oil to pan. Add onion and cook until lightly browned. Add fish sauce, lime juice, cilantro, mint, garlic, and jalapeno to pan. Add steak back to pan and bring to boil. Meanwhile, divide lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers evenly amongst 4 plates. Top salad with hot steak mixture and sauce. Top each salad with 1/2 cup rice.

  • I know this dish as Yum Nuer, a favorite of mine. We marinate the steak using the flavors above, grill over hot coals, slice thin across grain. We keep the onion raw, red works very well. Then assemble the salad pretty much as described. I skip the rice - 6/12/07
