Introduction

Much better than refried beans... and much healthier, too! Much better than refried beans... and much healthier, too!
Number of Servings: 8

Ingredients

    1 tsp olive oil
    1/2 onion, chopped
    1-2 cloves garlic
1 14oz can black beans, rinsed and drained
1/4 cup water (You may need to add a bit more than a 1/4 cup, but start there and keep an eye on them. It's all about the kind of texture you're going for. If you add too much, it will cook off!)
Chili sauce (like Siracha) to taste

Directions

Chop the onions and garlic. Heat the olive oil in a small saucepan over medium heat, then add the onions and garlic. Cook until the onions are translucent, adjusting the heat if necessary so the garlic doesn't burn. Add the beans and water. Cook, stirring frequently. As the beans heat up and soften, mash then with the spoon or a masher until you get the desired consistency. Enjoy!

They are very good. The only suggestion I have is to drain the beans and rinse them, then add about 1/4 cup of water so they get the consistancy of traditional refried beans. - 3/10/10

You are so right, EMMYPANTS... that is exactly how he makes them (I forgot the water step). I always drain and rinse the beans, so I didn't think to put that in there. Recipe writing is harder than it looks! I will fix it for future cooks. Thanks!

Need to mention that we have these about once/week. So yummy & yet healthy. And fast to make too - love that! Wondering how you got 8 servings tho - we came up w/about 4.....And that wasn't like a plateful or anything. Will definitely make often - thanks - 6/6/10

Am preparing brown rice to go with this recipe right now. Planning to use it as a topper over the rice for dinner. Will use a double portion for dinner, with low sodium corn as a side, and save the rest. - 8/13/10

These were super easy and tasty and my kids loved them. We had as a side dish with spanish rice and turkey enchilada casserole spark recipes. I do agree with prior review that it's closer to 4 servings than 8, but just entered as 2 servings for my nutrition log. - 10/8/15

I use Black beans made from scratch for less sodium. It takes about 1/2 water & 2 cups black beans. I mash 1 cup beans at a time and add the water and simmer at the end. I agree this is more like 4 servings. One of my favorite "go to" recipes. - 10/7/12
