Introduction

Delicious Turkish-style lentil soup. Delicious Turkish-style lentil soup.
Number of Servings: 4

Ingredients

    1 cup red lentils
    2 tbsp canola oil
    2 or more cups water
    2 tbsp white flour
    1 tsp salt
    4 lemon wedges

Directions

Wash lentils in water, then put them in a pot with 2 cups of water. Cook them slowly until they are soft.
Don't close the lid of pot, it will boil over.
If water doesn't look enough to cook lentils, you can always add some more.
Pour lentils in a blender, and blend well.
In the same pot, pour canola oil and add white flour, then cook the flour by whisking until it becomes light brown, but don't burn it.
Then pour the lentils inside the pot, and adjust the consistency with some hot water. (It is good when it is thick).
Season with salt, and serve with lemon wedges.
Enjoy!

I agree with KAEBAE "If it doesn't look good to you no big deal, why complain? I am glad UGURBOCEGI took the time to post this recipe. " - 3/13/13

    Incredible!
This is a basic lentil soup that I think tastes great on a cold day and can be made very quickly. My Turkish friend makes it with red pepper paste and red and black pepper. - 12/31/12

Why are so many people calling it delicious and rating it 1 star? lol - 9/2/08

I like the taste of lentils by themselves (no spices) and would probably like this recipe. I'm going to walk to the market in a few minutes to buy lentils (used the last 2 days ago) & will post how I feel about this soup. Won't be using flour or lemons. - 9/2/08

I personally like very basic recipes, and the beauty of this one is the ease with which you may use your own creativity to customize it to your own liking. If it doesn't look good to you no big deal, why complain? I am glad UGURBOCEGI took the time to post this recipe. - 9/2/08

Ditto to all these comments lentil soup does not need oil, salt, or flour. And is sooo delicious when made properly by adding vegetables and seasonings (Like Spike) and Bay leaves. - 9/2/08

I love lentils, but even halfway through reading this I thought it sounded pretty bland. What it really sounds like is a good base to start with...without the roux, any oil added should be for flavor, canola oil just doesn't cut it. Veggies and flavor...that's the ticket! - 9/2/08

You gotta add onions and garlic to get the Turkish kind! And you don't really need the flour. - 9/2/08

non-lentil eaters, please don't be turned off by this recipe - just about any other lentil soup recipe would be more worthy of trialling than this one. - 7/2/08

I'll try it but I'll add my own things to it. - 7/2/08

This recipe is merely a suggestion - there is nothing to add any flavor except lemons. You could probably use this as a base and add carrots, kale, tomatoes or whatever veggies you have around. Then throw in curry poweder or italian seasoning of some kind. On it's own, it would be too bland. - 7/2/08

    O.K.
Hmmm.. could this be just a basic recipe, and then you're supposed to add other things? I'm confused... - 7/2/08

Why would Spark People feature such an unappetizing and not so healthy recipe??? I too love lentils and there are so many more deserving recipes out there! - 7/2/08

I'll make again but will try different versions. Like adding garlic, etc. - 7/2/08

This sounds really gross. I make lentil soup all the time and never use flour or oil. I use a can of diced or puree tomatos (rotel if you like a little spice) and then I add lots of fresh veggies (carrots, celery, zuchinni, chopped red lettuce) and of course garlic and onion!! Ymmy & Healthy! - 7/2/08

Agree with other posters, this doesn't look very tasty. But it's got me in the mood to make lentil soup-- why make this boring version when healthy versions with vegetables are available!? - 7/2/08

I use this as a base for lentil soup. I add onions, garlic and keep back about a half-cup of the cooked lentils from blending to add back to the soup. Sometimes I add spinach as well. - 7/2/08

I agree that this does not sound very tasty or as healthy as a soup with vegetables and spices. - 7/2/08

This is NOT the real version of the very popular Turkish red lentil soup at all. The real recipe has onions, carrots and potatoes as well as spices like salt, pepper, paprika, cumin. You can add some garlic too. I use olive oil and chicken broth. The real thing is very flavorful. - 7/2/08

I've made lentils forever and this recipe definitely does not have what it takes. Lentils need other flavors to enhance them. I would never blend nor add flour. - 7/2/08

Sorry but vegetables could add flavour, and canola oil does not sound such an interesting choice. Flour is not necessary either. I am not convinced. - 7/2/08
