We all liked this cookie. I made mine with Splenda for the while sugar, and used sugar free chocolate chips. I put these on my favororite list. - 5/7/07

Fantastic cookie. I followed the others and made mine with Splenda white and brown sugar. I used the new Crisco too.
I choose to make cookies as healthy as I can. Homemade cookies are a special trest to be enjoyed and not to be made to feel guilty.

I'm so glad you like the recipe and you are so right about homemade cookies being a special treat to be enjoyed guilt-free. =o) I'm glad the substitutions worked out for you.

Not everyone on SP is on a diet and they may have others to bake for like my hubby who could care less how "bad" the food is. Crisco now has a 0 trans fat,at least i'm pretty sure it does. we are all, well most all, adults so we can figure it out or make it healthy. - 7/7/10

White flour and sugar are bad for you? Get a grip people! Unless you eat all 48 cookies, this recipe will not kill you or anyone else who eats it!

For those of us who like to have a cookie once in a while, this is a good recipe. For those who don't like cookies or the recipe, leave it alone.

Being new to Spark People,I'm surprised at this .it is NOT encouraging to avoid indulgences Crisco is NOT healthy.
White sugar is definitely not healthy, nor is white flour.
Refined products..bad for you and your insides! Unless you only eat this once a year, not a good recipe.

Splenda also makes brown sugar - I will make this cookie with that and the Splenda white, and replace the shortening with applesauce. - 7/1/10

This is the recipe I had since a child, and somehow lost. I would not change anything in it, as one of those cookies is just all I need. I will freeze the rest for surprise company. - 8/29/10

I'm so glad I could help you find a cherished recipe from childhood. This is my Memaw's recipe, probably off of the oatmeal box. Freezing them for surprise company is a fantastic idea, one that my Memaw frequently used as I recall often eating these cookies in their nearly frozen state. =o)

This sounds great - my kids will love them, and I will enjoy a treat as well. Thank you! I am disappointed, however, that so many people have such snarky (yes, SNARKY) comments. I think I am done reading all the ratings and evals. After this, I am keeping my opinions to myself. - 8/29/10

Thank you kindly for taking up for my Memaw's recipe. I hope your family liked the cookies when you made them. To me, they are an extra-special treat!

This looks like a great recipe to modify, thanks. I can't see spending more than 130 calories and 6 grams of fat on one cookie though, and definitely removing the Crisco, using egg whites and whole wheat flour, etc. - 7/2/10

You are so right! That's too much in fat and calories per cookie. I originally entered this recipe for my own use in the Nutrition Tracker. I NEVER expected to find out this became a featured recipe! I'm stunned, especially because of its high fat ingredients. I will make this recipe with subs.

Adding one cookie to your diet is not harmful, if you can control your self. - 8/29/10

I am with all the others disappointed in this unhealthy recipe. Also, Splenda is not considered healthy by many. Would prefer recipes using all-natural ingredients - replace Crisco w/applesauce, sugar w/Stevia or Truvia, etc. A little bad (chocolate chips) okay, but this is ALL bad. Disappointing - 8/29/10

I gotta tell you, I never expected this recipe to make Editor's Pick. If I'd known in advance I would've made healthier substitutions in the recipe. I originally entered this recipe for my own use in the Nutrition Tracker because I'd made a batch and I wanted to know its nutritional values.

Why would SP "feature" this recipe? Empty calories, saturated fats, huge sugar content. Just sayin.............. - 8/29/10

Although this is a fantastic recipe I was under the impression that Spark People was about healthy alternatives to previous unhealthy choices. This recipe has been in no way modified to approximate a healthy choice. Disappointed Spark People! - 8/29/10

    Reply from JEWELSRICH (7/26/11)
Thanks for giving it high marks! I wonder why SparkPeople featured this recipe, too. I didn't enter it with that end in mind, I just wanted to know the nutritional content and be able to enter it in the Nutrition Tracker. Without healthier substitutions, enjoy these cookies in moderation! =o)

I love this recipie and have made it several times. I leave out the toffee bits, though. Is it just me or are the toffee bits included in the calorie count? I looked at the calorie breakdown by ingriedient and did not see the toffee bits on the list, if that is the case they will have more calories. - 11/20/10

    Reply from JEWELSRICH (7/26/11)
Toffee bits ARE included in the calorie count because I entered all the ingredients myself using the info off the package. I don't know why SP didn't include the toffee bits in the calorie breakdown of one cookie. I'm so glad you like the recipe. It's my favorite from childhood; my Memaw made them!!

I guess I am "snarky" too. ( Whatever that means) By no means should we use Splenda (read the report published by Duke in 2008, which was shelved) Oats are great, butter is fine.....my sugar replacer is Stevia. Much better for us than any other sweeteners. Too many calories and Crisco? No way! - 9/2/10

this is dissapointing. i wouldn't expect this much fat/sugar in a healthy recipe at sparkpeople. i always change most of the fats with yogurt/applesauce/cottage cheese and use way less sugar. 2c sugar for 2c. flour?? i usually use 1/2c. And i make cookies/pies/cakes all the time and eat them too. - 8/30/10

If using Splenda, how would the carb count change? Can you use Whole Wheat flour or some other flour (I know it doesn't specify one). Some have suggested apple sauce instead of Crisco. How would that substitute? - 8/29/10

I come to this site for healthier receipes. I don't think people are being "snarky" by their comments other than the person who said that.!!! I am encouraged by those who want healthier alternatives which can be found for cookie receipes. Not against cookies... - 8/29/10

This recipe is not encouraging overeating it simply gives us a lowcal cookie that we can make at home for a treat "once in a while" and by the way it's really good. - 8/29/10

All things in moderation, right? Can't wait to try these. - 8/29/10

As SP has often said before, not all recipes are supposed to be uber healthy, the idea is that there are times with "life" happens & treats should not be denied. So step off the snarky comments! - 8/29/10

The crisco is terrible....and terrible for you. It makes it taste greasy in my opinion. Maybe if there was a sub for the crisco, say apple sauce or something. - 7/1/10
