Chef Meg made just a few tweaks before giving this one her seal of approval! She adds the spices early in cooking to help boost flavor and added a full pound of turkey for a more filling meal.
Number of Servings: 4

Ingredients

1 pound ground turkey, extra lean
    1/2 c onion, chopped fine
    2 garlic cloves, minced
    3/4 t ground cumin
    1 1/2 t dark chili powder
1/2 c red bell pepper, chopped fine
3/4 c salsa verde, fire roasted
1 (11 oz) can pizza dough, refrigerated, thin crust (use whole wheat if you can find it)
1 c Mexican blend cheese, shredded
    1 egg white, beaten

Directions

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Adjust oven rack to upper third of the oven.
Heat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add ground turkey and cook 5 minutes, stirring to crumble. Add onion and garlic; continue to cook for an additional 4-5 minutes or until onions are translucent.
Add spices and cook for 1 minute to bring out the flavors in the spices. Add chopped pepper; continue to cook 1 minute.
Remove mixture from heat and stir in salsa.
Unroll dough and divide into 4 equal portions. Working with one rectangle at a time place, 1/2 cup of turkey mixture on half of the dough then top with 2 tablespoons of cheese.
Using a pastry brush or fingers, brush the egg mixture on the border of the dough. Fold dough over turkey mixture and press with a fork to seal. If you prefer a crisp crust, brush some additional egg wash over the top of the calzone.
Bake 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.

Lower Carb Suggestion: Individual Serving
Place 1/2 cup of turkey mixture into an oven safe ramekin dish. Top with cheese and a quarter size portion of the dough. Bake 10 minutes.

We had this for dinner tonight and it was a keeper! Everybody loved it...didn't even get any complaints about the low sodium content. I made the crust using a whole wheat thin crust dough recipe on this site and it turned out great. Will definitely be making this again! - 8/3/09

I switched it up a bit, used tofu, increased spice slightly, used Trader Joe's Whole Wheat Pizza Dough, and 2% cheese and skim Mozzarella [1/2 & 1/2]. It was Yummy, and a hit in the house! - 9/13/09

A person won't die from eating a higher sodium recipe now and then folks!! It’s ok, not enough for a meal for some. It is better with ground beef. - 9/13/09

The sodium comes from the cheese, find low sodium;works well with shredded pork, beef, chicken and make own salsa to reduce sodium too. - 9/29/09

Very tasty! I had to count up the calories of the ingredients for myself because I couldn't believe something this good and filling could be low calorie. I agree with leaving out the cheese, though... it melted so much it kind of disappeared. But I didn't miss it. It was great! - 8/28/09

I made this for my husband and a few friends, none of whom are watching what they eat. They absolutely loved it and my friend's husband was surprised when he asked where I'd found the recipe. The guys insisted that I leave a comment and rating. This is a definite do-again meal. Sweet! - 3/24/10

You could also cut some of the fat & calories by using low-fat cheese. I'd add more veggies to increase the fiber, maybe replace some of the turkey with black beans to cut more calorie. - 8/19/09

I'll head to Trader Joe's to get the whole wheat pizza dough for next time. This time I improvised by using bisquick dough. this makes it less healthy and higher calories. The result was like a Cornish pasty. YUM. I also used 2% cheese. I couldn't taste the cheese so I will omit next time. - 9/27/09

Good recipe, but I agree that its high in sodium.
To reduce sodium, make your own salsa & choose cheese that isn't mexican blend.
For those of you saying it's not that high, its nearly 50% of your daily recommended. At one sitting, that is VERY high! Some have health reasons for wanting it lower.

The cheese got lost in the filling, it was a waste of calories. Also, if there's only 2 T cheese per calzone, that adds up to 1/2 cup, but the recipe calls for a full cup. I'd rather some sour cream or guacamole on the side. Otherwise, this tasted great! - 5/26/10

DELICIOUS! You couldn't tell it was turkey! I took the turkey off the heat AS SOON as it was no longer pink (Won't get too "chewy" this way) Could have used a little more cheese for my taste- but I could add cheese to everything.
Great recipe- definitly a make again!

I thought the meat to veggie ratio in this dish was way off - far too much meat. Also, if you use 1 pound of meat, & you are supposed to put only 4 times 1/2 cup of filling into the calzones, you end up with tons of filling left over! Not a well-planned recipe at all. I will not make this again. - 5/24/10
