Introduction

This is from an old Mennonite Sorghum cookbook I have. The original recipe calls for lard, but I used butter. I also used whole wheat flour to add some fiber and make it taste more authentic. Ingredients

    1 c. firmly-packed brown sugar
    1 c. butter (lard)
    1 1/2 c. sorghum
    1 or 2 eggs
    2 tsp. baking soda
    1/2 tsp salt
    2 tsp ginger
    1 tsp nutmeg
    1 tsp cinnamon
    1/2 c. hot water
    5 c. flour (approx. I mixed 3 cups whole wheat flour with 2 cups all purpose flour)

Directions

Cream together brown sugar, lard and sorghum. Add eggs, beat until well blended.
Stir baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg into hot water; stir into creamed mixture, blending thoroughly.
Add flour and mix well. Drop dough from a teaspoon onto an ungreased baking sheet. Sprinkle with sugar or flatten with a glass dipped in white sugar.
Bake in a preheated 375 degree F oven for 8-10 minutes.
Makes 8 to 9 dozen.
