Ingredients

    225 g stoned and chopped dates
    1 tsp baking soda, 1 dash salt
    300 ml hot water
    275 g wholewheat flour
    11g baking powder
    100g margarine, 80g walnuts
    100g soft brown sugar, 1 large egg

Directions

Put dates, salt and baking soda into the hot water. Stir and leave to cool. Put the flour into a bowl. Rub in the margarine, then stir in the walnuts and sugar. Mix well. Mix the dry ingredients into the cooled date mixture and beat in the egg. Put into a prepared loaf pan and bake at 180°C for 60 to 75 minutes. Leave to cool completely on a wire rack. Makes about 12 slices
