Ingredients

    4oz Butter (or margarine if you prefer)
    1/2 Pint of cold tea
    4oz Soft brown sugar
    4oz Dates (or prunes or raisins)
    9oz Plain Flour
    Pinch of salt
    2 Tsp bicarbonate of soda
    1/4 Tsp ground nutmeg
    1/4 Tsp ground cinnamon
    3oz Walnuts (chopped)

Directions

Grease a 2lb loaf tin and line with greased paper. Melt butter in saucepan, stir in tea, sugar, and chopped dates, bring to boil and simmer for around 4 minutes. Cool. Mix together flour, salt, bicarbonate of soda, nutmeg and cinnamon into a bowl. Stir in chopped walnuts, adding the melted ingredients and mix thoroughly until well mixed. Put into prepared tin and bake for 1 1/4 hour at 150 deg C (350 deg F / gas mark 4). Leave to settle in tin before turning onto a rack to cool. Slice when cool.
