This is an easy coffee cake and definitely a big hit with the family. My daughter loves to surprise me by making this for breakfast so I thought I would share it with you all! Enjoy!!! Ingredients

    2 1/2 C. Sifted all-purpose flour
    2 C. brown sugar
    1/2 t. salt
    2/3 C. shortening
    2 t. baking powder
    1/2 t. baking soda
    1/2 t. ground cinnamon
    1/2 t. ground nutmeg
    1 C. sour milk
    2 beaten eggs

Tips

To make sour milk: measure 1 cup of milk in a separate bowl and add 1 T. of vinegar (or lemon), let sit for 5 minutes. This is also the substitution for buttermilk.


Directions

Mix flour, sugar, salt, and shortening till crumbly; reserve 1/2 cup. To remaining crumbs, add baking powder, soda and spices; mix well. Add milk and eggs; mix well. Pour into 2 greased and floured 8 x 1 1/2-inch round pans; top with reserved crumbs. Bake at 375 for 25 to 30 minutes. Serve warm. Makes 2 cakes.
