Ingredients

    3-5 cups stale wheat bread, cubed
    2 cups milk
    1 cup heavy whipping cream
    1/2 salt
    3 eggs, separated
    1/3-1/2 cup brown sugar, unpacked
    1 tsp vanilla extract
    Zest from half an orange
    1 cup charoset

Tips

Charoset is just chopped up apples, nuts, and sometimes raisins with some honey, spices, and wine. You can substitute any dried fruit or fresh fruit.


Directions

Preheat oven to 350ºF
Soak bread in milk, cream, and salt. In a separate bowl, beat egg yolks, sugar, and extract. Add orange rind and charoset. Pour over soaked bread and fold in. Carefully fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.
Set baking dish in a pan of water and bake for 45 minutes.
