Introduction
This is a dish my mom used to make when I was growing up. One of my favorites. I have also made it with ground turkey - tastes just as yummy! This is a dish my mom used to make when I was growing up. Ingredients

2 pounds ground beef
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 clove minced garlic
2 cups water
16 oz can of tomatoes, undrained, cut up
6oz can tomato paste
1 1/3 cup pearled barley
Directions
Brown beef, onion, and garlic; drain.
Add the rest of the ingredients and bring to a boil.
Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 50-60 minutes or until barley is tender.
I have had a hard time finding pearled barley lately. I have made the recipe with quick cook barley and it works fine. Just reduce the simmering time to about 20-30 minutes, or until the barley is plump and tender.
