Ingredients

1 lb bag of dry split peas
    1 cup diced, cooked ham
    1 chicken bouillon cube
    1 small onion, chopped
1 small carrot or 1/2 cup diced baby carrots
    2 cloves garlic, minced
    6 cups water
    salt and pepper to taste

Directions

This can be cooked on the stove or in the crock pot. On the stove, add all ingredients to a big pot and bring to a boil. Continue to cook until peas are tender (20-30 min). In the crock pot, combine all ingredients and cook on high until peas are tender (about 4 hours). Season with salt and pepper to taste. Add more hot water if soup is too thick for your liking. This recipe was adapted from the recipe on the back of Goya split peas. Don't forget to rinse and sort the dried peas so you don't get any dirt or tiny rocks in your soup! This makes 6 (1cup) servings.

This IS like the recipe from the package. I added lemon pepper, celery salt and marjoram leaves this time around. I might do the croutons. Thanks Katie for suggesting I bake my own with leftover bread, olive oil and seasoning. - 2/20/14

We love croutons, too! I actually make them out of leftover whole wheat hotdog or hamburger buns. Olive oil and seasoning, bake until crispy. So yummy!

I do the same after a big ham diner. I use the bone and meat left on it for a healthy soup. Very nice for lunch and/or a soup and sandwich(tomato) dinner the next day. Thanks for sharing, it is easier for me to calculate my menu! - 10/9/10

Very good, and it thickened up nice. I made enough to freeze so I can have it again several times this week AND maybe next :) - 8/23/10

I always have enough soup or chili to freeze some. Easy meal later!
