Ingredients

    * 2-3 lbs boneless beef cubes (calculated for 2 lbs.)
    * 2 tablespoons shortening
    * 1 large onion, sliced
    * 4 cups boiling water
    * 1 tablespoon salt
    * 1 tablespoon lemon juice
    * 1 tablespoon sugar
    * 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
    * 1/2 teaspoon pepper
    * 1 1/2 teaspoons paprika
    * 1 dash allspice
    * 1 dash clove
    * 6 carrots, peeled and cut into chunks or 1 lb peeled baby carrot
    * 6 potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
    * 1/2 cup cold water
    * 1/4 cup flour

Directions

1.
1
Melt shortening over high heat in a large pot or dutch oven.
2.
2
Add beef cubes and brown over medium heat, stirring occasionally, about 15-20 minutes.
3.
3
Add onions, boiling water, salt, lemon juice, sugar, worcestershire sauce, pepper, paprika, allspice and cloves.
4.
4
Simmer, tightly covered, for about 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
5.
5
Add vegetables and simmer another 30 minutes (covered), or until tender.
6.
6
Note: if your lid is not tight on the pot, you may not have enough liquid left to just about cover everything after you add the veggies.
7.
7
If this is the case, add more water to barely cover ingredients.
8.
8
Mix cold water and flour together and blend until smooth.
9.
9
Push meat and veggies to the side of the pot and add flour mixture slowly, incorporating into liquid.
10.
10
When gravy thickens, stir all ingredients gently to distribute gravy evenly.
11.
11
Simmer another 5 or 10 minutes and enjoy!

    Combined this recipe with the slow cooker stew. I added crushed stewed tomatoes for one of the cups of water. I also omited the flour and used pureed white kidney beans to thicken the stew. It came out more of a stoup (half soup half stew) but it was very very good. I will be making this again. - 12/31/10

    I was looking for a stew recipe with a different flavor profile. This was spot on. I substitute a few things because i didn't have them on hand. I used about half a cup of white wine for the lemon juice and some Chinese five spice for the allspice and cloves. Kind of line African soup. - 3/28/12

    Wow! This is just like my usual beef stew but the seasonings are a little different. Tried this as is, and it's fabulous. Three thumbs up. :-) - 1/17/12

    Awesome!!! I made a few changes. Added sm can of diced no-salt added tomatoes. Left out carrots and added corn. Used Yukon Gold small potatoes and left unpeeled, because that is what I had on hand. Used gluten free bisquick instead of the flour as I needed this to be fluten free. - 1/9/12

    Awesome, this stew has amazing flavour. I started making it before I realized that it needed two hours to simmer so I skipped that part and added the veggies in with the water and spices, simmered for 20 minutes, thickened and served it. It was still amazing without the wait. - 4/29/11

    This stew is awesome! Even this 8yo son of mine who picks at everything! I used sweet potatoes instead of white ones and added green beans. Honey instead of sugar (1/2 tbs) and I cut the salt in half with a tbs beef broth "Better than Bullion". Thanks! - 8/21/10

    This stew was delicious! My whole family commented on how good it was. The aroma in the kitchen as it cooked was incredible. I had to put a lot more water in when I added the vegetables, and was afraid the flavor would get diluted, but I shouldn't have worried. Highly recommended! - 3/21/10

    This is a good, classic stew recipe. I left out the shortening. I also will decrease the amount of flour the next time I make this - it is very thick. This is my new 'go-to' stew recipe! - 11/25/09

    this recipe was excellent, my family devoured the entire pot
    I didn't have lemon or cloves but I used my favorite cumin, I needed more water so I used a beef bouillon package, will definitely make again
