I don't exactly like the concept of putting blackbean & corn salsa on top of a hotdog. You can have just as little calories and fat using Hormel's Vegetarian Chili with Beans, fat free mozzarella, whole wheat bun, and a 100% chicken or beef hotdog. Then it is most definitely a chili-dog! - 4/19/12

Sorry, but calling this recipe 'chili' is NOT appropriate. This is a 'salsa' dog at best. My family did not care for the salsa on a hotdog and begged me to whip up some of my homemade chili; which I gladly did. - 1/14/12

Not a bad concept. But definitely not a chili dog. Eating healthier is important, but I'd rather have a classic chili dog once in a while as opposed to this. Moderation. - 2/16/12

This is so delicious! I put it in a food processor to mix the flavors better. Roasted the hot dogs and cut in half. Served on half of a folded Sara Lee thin whole wheat bun, mustard, 2T of salsa, with a sprinkle of red. fat sharp cheddar - seriously delicious. Thank you SO much Chef Meg! - 1/16/12

Good recipe but it's not a chili-cheese dog if there is no chili! May I suggest keeping the chili, skipping the corn, and using only half of the bun as an alternative? - 1/2/12

Humm - as a chicka that lives a high lean prtein, moderate carbs & tries for only healthy fats I'm not sure I would subs. black beans. Whole wheat bun yes, reduced fat cheese for sure, and a turkey dog, but I think I'd make some healthy lean chili and go that route instead! (-: - 6/19/12

I love chili dogs, and, though this sounds good, it's not a chili dog.
Call it what it is - a black bean relish dog.

This is a great substitution. For those looking for the chili, original chili is beans and tomatoes with chili spice, only with meat when called "chili con carne". I never understood the need for meat on meat anyway. Never thought I would like black beans but now eat them almost everyday. - 1/7/12

Eating healthy does not instantly turn our minds to mush, this is NOT a chili dog this is a salsa dog. Putting the word chili in the recipe names do not make it so. Really disappointed in how many pictures do not match the recipe, I expected better from this site. - 9/14/12

This was really good. My brother made them for us for dinner one night. The only thing I will do different next time is to heat the salsa. I prefer my hot dogs hot. We told my dad about this recipe and he is anxious to try them. He's coming to visit next week, guess what's for dinner. - 10/7/11

I'm always disappointed when the picture doesn't match the recipe. But the title doesn't say "Chili Dog" it says "Chili Dog Makeover." And it is a very good one! This is a really great, all-purpose black bean salsa, though you need to add a bit of salt if you used salt-free beans and corn. Delish! - 12/20/12

I will be making this on thursday but will use hebrew national hot dogs, and I will use food processor for the other ingridients. I will cut the hot dogs in half and grill them in a pan and I think I will add tortilla strips on top for crunch, cant wait. - 6/19/12

Salsa on a hotdog does not make a chili dog. Maybe a new name? Salsa dog? I might try it just to taste the blend of ingredients. - 3/29/21

This recipe isn't even remotely low carb. That category needs to be removed from this recipe. Low carb means no wheat (not even whole wheat), no grains (corn is a grain) no beans/legumes. - 3/11/16

Had this for dinner tonight but without tomatoes bc my hubby won't eat them and I didn't have any cumin so I just added some onion powder and garlic powder. We both thought these were delicious and different from the other run of the mill recipes we've been making lately - 11/18/13

I understand this is a makeover, but don't call it a chili dog. Call it a black bean salsa dog. Any why is it so hard for a "professional chef" (and I use the term loosely here) get actual photos of her food? Doesn't she have a camera...or a camera phone? Not impressed - 11/27/12

Why is it I'm having difficulty grasping the concept of a nutritionally healthy chili cheese hotdog makeover??????? Still, this sounds like it might work. Anything with jalapenos has got to be good and tasty......I'll be looking for the turkey hotdogs next trip to the store. - 12/23/11

A great makeover for a favorite of mine. I had stopped eating them all together, so it's good to have an alternative. I'm going to add a little squirt of mustard and then it will be perfect! Thanks Chef Meg! - 10/2/11
