Introduction

Ingredients

    4 ounces lean beef
    1/3 red onion, chopped
    3 stalks celery, chopped
    salt-free seasoning blend
    4 portabello mushroom caps, stems removed
    2 slices low-fat Cheddar cheese
    2 lettuce leaves
    2 slices tomato

Tips

Directions

1. Roast the portabella mushrooms at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes.
2. Mash the beef, onion, celery and Mrs. Dash together, form into 2 patties, place on a grill or pan and cook through.
3. Take the mushrooms out of the oven and pat them dry with a paper towel.
4. Place your patty on the portabello "bun" with the cheese and veggies and mustard and ketchup, if you'd like.

    UH OH!!! If you are going to eat low-carb., first rule is do NOT eat low fat. Also, there is a great OOpsie roll recipe for buns. Just cream cheese and eggs for the oopsie rolls. I think someone has posted the recipe on Spark. But you can also Google it.
    So, add mayo, bacon and full fat cheese!!!

    The recipe is very good. However to the person who said she would not eat a mushroom instead of the burger...well that is your choice, but this is to rate the recipe not give an opinion on what you would or would not do. Thanks - 1/16/15

    I'm not a big red meat eater, so I switched out the beef for chicken that I ground from chicken breasts that I had and changed the low-fat cheddar cheese to a small amount of mozzarella. This was very delicious! - 9/21/13

    Cost?

    It's all very well to provide recipes for which you've worked on the basics to reduce calories, sugars, salts, whatever.
    But we need to be able to afford these ingredients.

    We don't all have Farmers' or other produce Markets - especially not a FM where prices are lower than shops.

    It seems that the carbs listed are higher than what they actually would be for each serving. The carbs in the veges and the small amount of carbs in the cheddar cheese in no way total up to 22.7 grams of carbs. - 9/25/13

    I don't think it's a burger substitute either but as stuffed mushrooms, they're great.
    Remember to take the gills (brown ribby stuff) out of the portobellos.
    I can now buy beef burger at lower fat percentages than either turkey or chicken - two options I find tasteless.

    Ooooh I love this idea! I'm a huge mushroom fan & usually add some chopped to my burger patties but this idea is divine & good for me! Definitely picking up some Portabellos next time I'm at the grocers.

    Not sure where the complaint about cost comes in? These are really basic ingredients.

    Not tasty, family said thumbs down. I just buy Sara Lee 45 cal. per slice bread, toast it and use that for buns, easier, not too many calories, and tastes good, kids like it. Way too much celery, yuck! - 9/3/14

    CMFARRELL36 is right. Mushrooms were pricey! Then, I couldn't make the patties thin enough AND keep the onions and celery in. I couldn't fit all that the recipe called for, so I threw a lot of away. I ran out of patty before I finished, and ended up eating mostly mushroom. Patty was tasty though. - 1/12/14

    4 ounces of beef for 2 burgers???? You don't cut back on protein if you're trying to go low carb. I also agree with not using low-fat cheese. You'd be better off using 4 oz beef per burger. Then, you'll have a meal instead of a snack. - 8/7/15

    The mushrooms I used were a bit thick so I'll trimmed them down the next time. I also added additional spices to the meat mix and rubbed on the mushroom to perk up the flavor. I can see using this alternative to using eggplant. Thanx! - 5/13/18

    This is a great swap for bread and I love mushrooms and their health benefits. I found a great hummus called "Oasis"that comes in a variety of flavors and is only 15 calories or so and I like it instead of cheese. Sometimes use vegetarian type burgers too with this. - 11/13/17
